If your AWS Elemental MediaLive stream looks black on YouTube, find the first point in the signal path where the picture disappears before changing encoder settings. Check the source, MediaLive input and output, then YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Whether audio continues and whether the fault begins at startup or after an interruption can help narrow the cause—but without the stream’s configuration and telemetry, no single cause can be assumed.
Locate the first black image in the signal path
Trace the video through the workflow: upstream source → MediaLive input and channel → encoded output → YouTube. Check each stage in order and record whether audio continues, whether the picture is continuously black or intermittent, and when the problem starts.
- Check the source. Inspect the picture locally or at the upstream encoder. If it is already black there, investigate the source before changing MediaLive or YouTube settings.
- Check MediaLive. Review the input and channel status, then any available output preview or monitoring. Identify whether video is present at the input and whether the encoded output contains picture.
- Check YouTube. Inspect the stream preview in Live Control Room. If the preview is correct but one viewer reports black video, record the event URL, device or app, browser, time, and stream-health state; treat that separately from an ingest problem.
AWS describes the workflow as an upstream source, a MediaLive input and channel, and a downstream output. The first stage where the picture is black is the most useful boundary for the next checks. AWS Elemental MediaLive overview
Check the MediaLive input and input-loss behavior
If the channel fails to start
MediaLive probes an input when a channel starts. If it cannot detect the input, startup can fail. AWS lists three possible reasons: the input is absent, its settings do not match the source, or the source exceeds the channel specifications. Confirm that the selected input is the intended live source, that it is present and sending video, and that its settings describe the signal actually arriving. AWS: Troubleshooting channel startup

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the channel runs but turns black
Check whether the source stopped or became unusable and whether MediaLive’s input-loss replacement behavior is involved. AWS documents this default sequence: repeat the last valid frame for 1,000 milliseconds, encode black frames for 1,000 milliseconds, then encode a black slate indefinitely. A black output can therefore indicate lost usable input rather than a frame made black by YouTube. This sequence describes the documented default; a channel with customized replacement settings may behave differently. AWS: Input loss behavior
Match the input type to the actual codec
MediaLive codec support depends on input type. Check both the configured input type and the codec or codecs carried by the source against AWS’s support documentation. Do not assume that a signal is compatible solely because the source is reachable. AWS: Supported codecs by input type

Verify the MediaLive output and YouTube ingest settings
Once the source and MediaLive input are confirmed, inspect the output configuration before changing bitrate. Confirm that the output includes an active video encoder—not only audio or a slate—and that the destination and stream key are correct. Do not expose the stream key in logs or screenshots. Check that the output resolution and frame rate make sense for the detected source; AWS’s example workflow recommends an encoding profile matched to the source resolution. AWS Elemental MediaLive overview
Compare the actual output with YouTube’s live ingest guidance. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. Select a bitrate using YouTube’s recommendation for the output codec, resolution and frame rate; a bitrate from a different configuration is not a reliable target.

Use YouTube’s preview to separate ingest from playback
Before the public event, test with movement and audio representative of the planned program. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream health and messages during delivery. If its incoming preview is black, continue investigating the source, MediaLive and ingest path. If the preview is correct but a viewer sees black, capture the viewer’s device or app, browser, time and event URL alongside the stream-health state. The available guidance does not establish a specific black-screen error code or guarantee that every playback symptom will appear in stream health. Troubleshooting by symptom
| Observation | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Source picture is black | Investigate the source or upstream encoder; later stages cannot restore picture that is already absent. |
| Channel fails during startup | Confirm the input is present, its settings match the source, and the source is within channel specifications. |
| Picture becomes black after an interruption | Check source continuity and MediaLive input-loss settings. The documented default ends in an indefinite black slate, but customized settings may differ. |
| Input appears present but output is black | Verify input type and actual codec, then check for an active video encoder and a suitable output profile. |
| MediaLive output is correct but YouTube preview is black | Check the output destination, stream key and compatibility with YouTube’s ingest protocol and encoder requirements. |
| YouTube preview is correct but a viewer sees black | Record the viewer’s device/app, browser, time and event URL, then compare that report with stream health. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a separate workflow that keeps uploaded video running as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera workflow.
