To loop a file indefinitely in AWS Elemental MediaLive, use a file input and set its sourceEndBehavior to LOOP. MediaLive can pull an MP4 from Amazon S3 or an HTTP(S) server. For a 1080p H.264 YouTube Live output, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. The input loop is documented; a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube output protocol still needs to be confirmed for your channel configuration.
How do I loop a video in AWS Elemental MediaLive?
Create or configure a MediaLive file input that points to the video, then set InputSettings.sourceEndBehavior to LOOP. AWS defines this option as: “Loop input if it is a file. This allows a file input to be streamed indefinitely.” See the MediaLive Input API reference.
The documented file source can be an MP4 on Amazon S3 or an HTTP(S) server. AWS also supports static TS or M2TS files from those locations. Growing TS files that are being written while MediaLive is using them are unsupported, so use a completed static file rather than a recording that is still expanding. Configuration outline
- Prepare the source file. Use an MP4 at an accessible S3 or HTTP(S) location. Confirm its codec, frame rate, bitrate, resolution, and audio format before building the channel; those details affect the encoder settings, and there is no single source profile specified here.
- Create a file input. In the MediaLive channel configuration, attach the file input that points to the S3 object or HTTP(S) resource. Ensure MediaLive can retrieve the object from its location.
- Set the end behavior. In the input settings, set
sourceEndBehaviortoLOOP. This is the file-loop control; it is not a schedule or an external repeat process. - Configure the output separately. Select an output group and protocol supported by your chosen MediaLive channel configuration, and set the video and audio encoding to match YouTube’s requirements. The available evidence does not establish a complete tested channel profile.
- Validate the actual ingest path. Before relying on a continuous broadcast, verify that the configured output protocol and destination are accepted by the intended YouTube ingest endpoint.
Can MediaLive play an MP4 from S3 on repeat?
Yes. The documented combination is an MP4 file input sourced from Amazon S3 and sourceEndBehavior set to LOOP. AWS describes the loop behavior as allowing a file input to be streamed indefinitely. The input documentation does not prescribe a specific MP4 codec, frame rate, bitrate, or audio profile; choose and validate those for the channel and intended output rather than assuming that every MP4 has a suitable encoding.

What bitrate should I use for 1080p YouTube Live?
For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 gives different targets by frame rate:

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 figures, not a MediaLive-tested profile. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings when configuring the channel.
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, but the bitrate figures above are specifically the H.264 recommendations. Use a codec and settings supported by the selected MediaLive output configuration, and keep the chosen frame rate consistent with the 30 fps or 60 fps bitrate target.

Can AWS MediaLive stream directly to YouTube using RTMPS?
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. However, AWS’s supported-input documentation says that MediaLive RTMP Pull and RTMP Push inputs do not support RTMPS. That limitation concerns inputs; by itself, it does not establish which output protocols a particular MediaLive channel configuration supports. Do not infer that a direct RTMPS output to YouTube is available—or unavailable—from the input limitation. Confirm the output protocol in the chosen configuration and that YouTube accepts the intended endpoint. YouTube’s recommendation is in its live encoder settings; the AWS input protocol details are in its supported input formats.
What about YouTube HLS ingest?
YouTube documents HLS as an ingest alternative with specific requirements: MPEG-TS segments must last 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments, and requests must use HTTPS POST/PUT. These requirements do not establish that a particular MediaLive output group meets them. Treat HLS as a possible route only after confirming that the selected AWS output satisfies all of YouTube’s requirements. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

What must be decided before building a production channel?
The looping flag answers what happens when the file reaches its end. It does not choose or validate the rest of the broadcast design. Specify these items for your own source and output:
- Input format and location: MP4 or static TS/M2TS, hosted on S3 or HTTP(S).
- Source properties: video codec, resolution, frame rate, input bitrate, and whether audio is present and which codec it uses.
- Output encoding: codec, 1080p frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and audio settings.
- Output group and ingest protocol: confirm that the selected MediaLive configuration supports the destination protocol and that YouTube accepts it.
- Operational validation: confirm that the file is accessible and that the end behavior is set to loop before depending on it for a continuous broadcast.
The AWS and YouTube settings cited above do not establish a deployed end-to-end configuration, regional availability, or service cost. Validate the specific channel and ingest path you plan to use.
