AWS Elemental MediaLive Idle: How to Start a YouTube Stream

Idle means an AWS Elemental MediaLive channel is not running. Check the input, start the channel manually, then verify the YouTube preview and publish scheduled events in Live Control Room.

Idle means your AWS Elemental MediaLive channel is not running; it is not, by itself, an error. In the MediaLive console, open Channels, select the intended channel, and choose Start. Check that its input is ready first. Once MediaLive reaches Running, confirm YouTube receives video in Live Control Room; for a scheduled event, select Go live there after the preview appears.

Before starting: confirm the source and destination

Starting the channel is only one part of the workflow. Verify that the channel you selected is configured for the intended YouTube event and that its input and output are ready.

  • Input: A push input must already be sending to MediaLive before the channel starts. If the channel has multiple inputs, check the schedule and input selection so it starts with the source you intend.
  • YouTube event: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select or create the intended stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Treat the key as a password; do not publish or share it.
  • Output: In the MediaLive output destination settings, compare the protocol and URL with YouTube’s current values. MediaLive has separate fields for the destination URL and stream name/key; do not assume a fixed endpoint or key.

A MediaLive RTMP push input and an RTMP output to YouTube are different connections: the input brings a source into MediaLive, while the output sends the encoded stream onward to YouTube. AWS notes that with an RTMP push input, the upstream source attempts delivery to the MediaLive input endpoint and MediaLive responds to its handshake when the channel starts; while the channel is stopped, the source pauses. See AWS guidance on RTMP push inputs.

Start the channel and verify the YouTube stream

  1. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open Channels and select the intended channel. Check its state and details, including that its output is configured for the intended YouTube event.
  2. Confirm the intended source is ready. For a push input, make sure it is pushing to MediaLive; if there are multiple inputs, inspect the schedule and selection.
  3. Choose Start for the selected channel. AWS documents that channels are started manually; the channel should move from Starting toward Running. See the MediaLive start and stop instructions and channel state definitions.
  4. Allow time for startup. AWS says most AWS Cloud channels start in three minutes or less, and that up to ten minutes can still be normal. Configuration complexity and EC2 instance size are among the factors that can affect startup time.
  5. Return to YouTube Live Control Room and check for incoming video and preview. Starting MediaLive does not necessarily publish a scheduled YouTube event. When its preview appears, select Go live in Live Control Room if the event is scheduled.

Check YouTube encoder settings and credentials

Use the stream URL and key shown for the specific event in YouTube Live Control Room, then enter the matching destination values in MediaLive. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, when supported. Match the configured protocol and URL to the values YouTube displays rather than substituting a remembered or generic endpoint. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend H.264, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so follow YouTube’s current table for your source rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

MediaLive separates the RTMP destination URL from the stream name. Its destination settings can also include a username and a Parameter Store password reference for destinations that require authentication. Use the exact values and authentication requirements for your YouTube stream; do not expose the stream key in screenshots or public documentation. If the key may have been compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, after which you must update the MediaLive destination. See YouTube’s stream key guidance and AWS RTMP output destination settings.

Troubleshoot by the state or symptom

What you see What to check Next action
Channel remains Idle Idle means the channel is not running. The title or state alone does not identify why it remains idle. Verify you chose Start on the correct channel. Inspect its state details, alerts, and logs for account-specific information.
Channel remains Starting Startup can take time; AWS says most AWS Cloud channels start within three minutes and up to ten minutes can still be normal. If it persists beyond that, inspect the channel details, alerts, and logs rather than assuming a particular cause.
Channel is Running, but video is missing or wrong A Running state does not prove that the intended content is reaching the encoder. Check source readiness, input attachment, and schedule or input selection. Confirm that the source is actually sending and that MediaLive is using the intended input.
MediaLive is running, but YouTube has no preview Compare YouTube’s current stream URL and key with MediaLive’s output URL and stream name/key; check RTMP versus RTMPS. Correct the destination values. If the key was compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the MediaLive destination.
Preview appears, but the scheduled event is not live YouTube’s scheduled-event workflow requires a separate publishing action. Select Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.

For a channel-specific failure, consult the actual state, alerts, logs, input, schedule, and output settings. The state label alone cannot establish whether the cause is an unissued start action, authorization, configuration, or another issue. AWS’s channel state monitoring guidance explains where to inspect status information.

Understand charges while the channel is idle

Idle does not mean free. AWS documents charges for idle channels, and an attached push input can also incur idle input charges while its channel is not running. The amount depends on the applicable regional pricing and the actual channel and input configuration; check the current AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing for your setup.
