In the campaign, she recalled breaking out at 14, described trying several remedies, and said Proactiv worked for her. Those are her statements in a skincare advertisement—not independent evidence about her medical history or the product’s effectiveness.
What Lavigne said about her acne
The campaign announcement attributed the story to Lavigne as a personal recollection. She said: “I started breaking out when I was 14,” during her first year of high school, which she described as an intimidating time.
She also said she had tried “everything—from toothpaste to rubbing alcohol, men’s aftershave to tea tree oil” before using Proactiv. Her account continued: “Fortunately, it really worked for me. Today, I still use Proactiv to help keep my skin clear.” The word “today” referred to the time of the 2010 announcement; it should not be read as a statement about her current routine.
The release also quoted her saying, “Acne is a drag. It’s not cute. It’s not fun. I think it’s really important to take care of your skin—especially from an early age.” These remarks express her campaign-era view and experience, rather than clinical guidance.

What the commercial was promoting
Guthy-Renker announced that Lavigne had signed on for a prominent role in a new Proactiv campaign built around her experience with acne. The campaign promoted Proactiv Solution, described in the 2010 announcement as an acne-treatment system featuring a then-new micro-crystal benzoyl peroxide formulation. That is a historical description of how the system was marketed at the time, not confirmation of the current formula or product lineup.
Lenny Lieberman, identified in the announcement as head of Guthy-Renker Studio and producer of the ads, said Lavigne wanted to discuss acne “in a plain-speaking, matter-of-fact way that is relatable.” This describes the campaign’s intended tone; it does not establish how viewers responded to the commercial.

What this testimonial can—and cannot—show
The announcement documents what Lavigne said in a paid brand campaign and what the campaign promoted. It does not independently verify her health history, compare acne treatments, or establish that Proactiv caused the outcome she described. Her mention of home remedies is an anecdote, not evidence that those approaches are effective or comparable.
The source also does not identify underlying data for its broader health or promotional claims. Those claims should not be treated as independently established facts. The most reliable way to understand the ad is as a celebrity testimonial from a specific campaign in 2010, not as a current product endorsement or a clinical assessment.
