Specialized abilities expand what a bender can do within an art; they do not let ordinary benders switch elements. The Avatar is the exception, described by Paramount+ as the only master of all four elements. The skill list below is a commonly used overview from a fan-maintained reference, not a definitive official glossary.
The four elemental arts
Paramount+ frames the setting as four nations associated with water, earth, fire, and air, and says that only the Avatar masters all four. Its franchise guide likewise describes bending as a skill and discipline practiced by some people in each nation. The four elemental arts are therefore the core system; the specialized techniques are branches or applications within it.
| Art | Nation association | What the framework establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Waterbending | Water Tribes | One of the four elemental arts; its specialized abilities include healing and bloodbending in the commonly used fan-maintained overview. |
| Earthbending | Earth Kingdom | One of the four elemental arts; the overview lists metalbending, lavabending, and seismic sense as specialized techniques. |
| Firebending | Fire Nation | One of the four elemental arts; the overview distinguishes lightning generation, lightning redirection, and combustionbending. |
| Airbending | Air Nomads | One of the four elemental arts; the overview lists flight and spiritual projection as specialized skills. |
The nation associations are part of the official four-nation framing. The specific technique classifications in the table come from the Avatar Wiki’s fan-maintained overview, so they are useful labels rather than a claim that every boundary is settled official terminology.
Waterbending skills
Healing
Healing is a specialized waterbending skill in the fan-maintained overview. Waterbending also includes manipulating water in different forms; the precise label applied to a particular use can depend on the taxonomy being followed.
#1 Best Overall
- WATERBENDER: Master the element of water with Katara (Book One)
- BOOK ONE: 4.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book One” of Avatar: The Last Airbender
- ARTICULATED: Features 14 points of articulation for play and display
- ACCESSORIES: Includes removable water pouch plus water whip effect
- BATTLE ACTION: Performs unique battle action by pulling the left arm back
Bloodbending
Bloodbending is another named specialized skill in that overview. It should be understood as a distinct capability within waterbending, not as a separate elemental art.
Ice and water in plants
The reference also discusses using waterbending to manipulate ice and water held in plants. These are best described as applications of waterbending rather than separate branches unless a specific canon source supports the narrower classification.
Earthbending skills
Metalbending
Metalbending is listed as a specialized earthbending technique. The inventory establishes the name and its association with earthbending, not a full account of its mechanics or who can learn it.
Rank #2
- MASTER PLANNER: Make a master plan with Sokka (Book One)
- BOOK ONE: 4.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book One” of Avatar: The Last Airbender
- ARTICULATED: Features 14 points of articulation for play and display
- ACCESSORIES: Includes boomerang and club accessories
- BATTLE ACTION: Performs unique battle action by twisting the torso
Lavabending
Lavabending is also grouped with earthbending in the secondary overview. Calling it a specialized technique avoids implying that it is a fifth elemental art.

Seismic sense is a named earthbending skill in the overview. It is distinct from manipulating earth as an ordinary application, although the available official framework does not provide a comprehensive taxonomy for drawing that boundary.
Firebending skills
Lightning generation
Generating lightning is one listed firebending capability. It is not interchangeable with redirecting lightning: generation and redirection describe separate skills.
Rank #3
- FIRE BENDER: Master the element of fire with Zuko (Book Three)
- BOOK THREE: 6.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book Three” of Avatar: The Last Airbender
- SOFT TUNIC: Features 22 points of articulation and a soft good tunic
- ACCESSORIES: Includes five swappable hands one alternate faceplate
- FIRE EFFECT: Also includes fire bending effect to recreate iconic battles
Lightning redirection
Lightning redirection is the ability’s separate entry in the fan-maintained inventory. Keeping it distinct from generation prevents the imprecise catch-all label “lightningbending” from obscuring two different capabilities.
Combustionbending
Combustionbending is another specialized firebending skill in the overview. The sources here establish its place in the commonly used list, not detailed rules about its operation or limits.
Airbending skills
Flight
Flight is listed as a specialized airbending skill. It belongs to the airbending inventory rather than constituting a separate elemental art.
Rank #4
- THE AVATAR: Master all four elements with Aang (Book Three)
- BOOK THREE: 6.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book Three” of Avatar: The Last Airbender
- SOFT TUNIC: Features 22 points of articulation and a soft goods tunic
- ACCESSORIES: Includes four swappable hands one alternate faceplate
- AIR EFFECT: Also includes a staff and an air bending effect to recreate iconic battles
Spiritual projection
Spiritual projection is likewise listed as a specialized airbending skill. Because spirit-related abilities can be classified differently across franchise and fan references, this label should be treated as part of the secondary overview rather than a universally settled category.
Energybending is separate from the four elemental arts
The fan-maintained reference treats energybending as a distinct fifth art. That does not make it an ordinary nation-based bending style alongside water, earth, fire, and air. The official series description’s core distinction remains that the Avatar alone masters all four elements; the more detailed taxonomy of energybending comes from the secondary reference.

Paramount+ episode descriptions show learning as part of the story’s bending tradition: Aang goes to learn earthbending from King Bumi, Aang and Katara seek a waterbending master, and Zuko and Aang set out to learn the true meaning of firebending from the original teachers. These examples support the role of instruction and practice, but they do not establish that every specialized skill is available to every bender.

The official franchise guide identifies Aang as the Avatar and describes his journey with Katara, Sokka, and Toph as a quest to restore balance and end the Fire Nation’s reign. That story context helps explain why the four arts matter: bending is both a way characters interact with the world and a tradition shaped by nations, teachers, and discipline.
How to read the skill list
- The four nation-linked arts are the core framework established by official Paramount+ descriptions.
- The specialized names are a practical inventory from a fan-maintained reference, not a fully authoritative canon glossary.
- Some techniques are straightforwardly presented as named specialties in that overview; other actions, including manipulating plant-held water, may be better described as applications.
- Do not infer that a listed skill is easy to learn, available to every bender, or governed by a particular limitation without an episode or official franchise source establishing that detail.
- No ranking of the four arts follows from the available framework; it establishes categories and selected teaching examples, not a power scale.
