Yes. Avatar: Fire and Ash delivered the second-biggest global opening of 2025, according to the Associated Press’s Dec. 21 estimate: $345 million worldwide over its opening weekend, behind Zootopia 2 at $497.2 million. Disney’s next-day report put the debut at $347.1 million. The result was a major launch, but it was smaller than Avatar: The Way of Water’s $435 million global opening in 2022.
How much did Avatar: Fire and Ash make opening weekend?
The opening estimates varied slightly by report date. The Associated Press reported an estimated $345 million worldwide on Dec. 21, 2025. Disney’s Dec. 22 opening-weekend update gave a total of $347.1 million, comprising $89 million in the United States and Canada and $258.1 million internationally. These are dated estimates from separate reports, not a single final settled figure.
| Report | Worldwide opening | Domestic | International |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associated Press, Dec. 21, 2025 | $345 million estimated | Not stated in the cited report | Not stated in the cited report |
| Disney, Dec. 22, 2025 | $347.1 million | $89 million | $258.1 million |
Disney also reported that premium formats accounted for 66% of the domestic opening and 3D showtimes contributed 56%. Those figures describe the share of domestic sales; by themselves, they do not establish that the formats caused the film’s overall performance.
Where did it rank among 2025 openings?
In the Associated Press’s Dec. 21 comparison, Fire and Ash ranked second among global openings of 2025. Zootopia 2 was first, with a reported three-day global opening of $497.2 million. The ranking is worldwide, not domestic-only, and reflects the contemporaneous estimates reported at that time. The Associated Press’s opening-weekend report provides that comparison.

How did its opening compare with The Way of Water?
Fire and Ash opened below its predecessor on both comparable measures cited by the Associated Press. Its $345 million worldwide estimate was less than Avatar: The Way of Water’s $435 million global debut in 2022; its $88 million North American opening was below the predecessor’s $134 million North American opening. The global and North American figures are distinct comparisons and should not be mixed.
The opening-weekend gap did not prevent a long theatrical run. Disney reported that by Jan. 4, 2026, Fire and Ash had reached $1.083 billion worldwide: $306 million domestic and $777.1 million international. That later cumulative total measures the film’s subsequent run, not the size of its opening weekend. Disney’s opening-weekend update and its Jan. 4 box-office update give the dated figures.
