Their words reflected the reach of a career that helped shape Australian music through record labels, promotion and touring. A state memorial followed on 24 March.
Why Michael Gudinski mattered to Australian music
Gudinski founded Mushroom Records in 1972 and built a career across record labels, artist promotion, touring and related music businesses. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia describes his early promotion of local Melbourne bands and his later support for Australian musicians in its career tribute. Mushroom Group’s biography gives his dates as 22 August 1952 to 2 March 2021.
One early milestone was Mushroom Records’ release of Skyhooks’ debut album, Living in the 70’s. ABC News reported in 2021 that by 1975 it had become the biggest-selling album by an Australian act in Australia, with 240,000 copies sold. That is a historical figure and ranking, not a current sales measure.
His contribution was also recognized by the music industry: APRA AMCOS records that Gudinski received the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at the 1998 APRA Music Awards.

What happened at Gudinski’s state memorial?
The Victorian Government’s memorial summary records an Acknowledgment of Country, a didgeridoo tribute by Amos Roach, speeches and performances. Family members and artists took part, including Ed Sheeran, Jimmy Barnes, Kylie Minogue and Lee Simon.
At the memorial, Minogue described Gudinski’s role in her journey as a “scrawny girl from Melbourne to the world and back home again.” ABC News reported that more than 7,200 people gathered for the event; that attendance figure is the outlet’s report, rather than a number given on the government’s memorial page.

A legacy remembered through relationships and work
The tributes connected Gudinski’s influence to both personal relationships and the infrastructure of Australian music. Minogue’s words recalled a bond spanning her career, Barnes credited him with helping move the country’s music business forward, and Springsteen remembered a friend as a “music man.” His work founding Mushroom Records and promoting artists gives that praise a concrete industry context.
APRA AMCOS’s tribute documents his 1998 award, while the National Film and Sound Archive’s account traces his support for local performers. Together with the memorial’s performances and public gathering, those records show why his death prompted responses that crossed generations and national borders.
