Audible’s February 18, 2026 rollout brings Immersion Reading into the Audible app. For eligible books, users can switch from Listen to Read & Listen and follow Kindle eBook text highlighted in time with the audiobook’s professional narration. The feature is not the first version of Immersion Reading: it expands a Kindle-and-Audible capability introduced in 2012 by making the combined experience available within supported Audible apps.
What Audible’s Immersion Reading feature does
When a title is eligible and you own its matching Kindle eBook and Audible audiobook, Read & Listen combines the two in a synchronized view. In the Audible app, the eBook text appears as the audiobook plays, with the words highlighted to follow the narration. You can use the text-and-audio view or return to audio-only Listen mode.
The narration is the audiobook recording, not text-to-speech generated from the Kindle book. The feature is also distinct from screen-reader tools, other accessibility functions, and Audible’s separate Page Sync feature for following a print edition while listening.
What changed in 2026—and what did not
Immersion Reading and Whispersync for Voice date back to Amazon and Audible’s 2012 announcement, which introduced synchronized reading and narration with a focus on Kindle Fire devices. Whispersync for Voice has also been associated with keeping a reader’s place when moving between a Kindle book and its Audible counterpart.

The 2026 change is the reading surface: Audible brought the combined experience into its own app. The current help documentation uses Read & Listen for the experience and describes the related format-switching capability as formerly known as Whispersync for Voice. Kindle still matters because the synchronized text comes from the matching eBook entitlement; the expansion does not make every Audible title a read-along title.
What you need before you start
- The matching Kindle eBook in your Kindle library.
- The matching Audible audiobook in your Audible library.
- A title pairing that supports Read & Listen. An audiobook and an eBook with similar titles are not necessarily compatible editions.
- A supported device or app for the function you want. Switching formats and viewing synchronized highlighted text have different documented support lists.
In most cases, owning only the audiobook is not enough for the full text-and-audio experience. Edition, language, abridgment, marketplace, and account association can affect whether two formats pair. Use the same Amazon/Audible account ecosystem and check eligibility before purchasing on the assumption that two listings will synchronize.
How to find eligible books and check the cost
Look for a Read & Listen label on the Audible title details page, or a Read & Listen badge or library filter in the Audible app. On an eligible Kindle eBook page, look for Add Audible narration. Audible’s Read & Listen help page says the Add Narration offer links the Kindle eBook and audiobook when the audiobook is bought with the matching eBook.

There is no universal price to quote: the offer and its price depend on the title and marketplace. If you already bought one format, check the relevant listing before buying the other separately; do not assume a discounted Add Narration price will be available retroactively. The feature may not have a separate software fee, but that does not mean the two book formats are included together or that every customer already owns both.
Audible said its launch included hundreds of thousands of titles in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French. That is the company’s launch figure, not a guarantee that a particular title is eligible in every country. Eligibility is specific to the title pairing, market, and device.
How to turn on Read & Listen
In the Audible app
- Open an eligible audiobook in the Audible app.
- Start playback.
- Use the mode toggle above the cover image.
- Select Read & Listen rather than Listen.
The matching text should appear and follow the narration. To return to audio-only playback, switch back to Listen. App layouts and labels can change, so consult Audible’s current help page if the controls differ on your version.

From the Kindle app to Audible
- Open the matching Kindle book.
- Open the three-dot More menu.
- Select Listen on Audible.
- Confirm the handoff to the Audible app.
This is a route from Kindle reading into Audible listening; it is not a promise that every platform presents the same combined view or handoff.
Device support: switching is not the same as highlighted reading
Audible’s help documentation separates devices that support switching between reading and listening from those documented for Immersion Reading inside an app. That distinction matters if you expect to see text highlighted on a particular screen.

These are the device categories in Audible’s current documentation, not a guarantee that every model, operating-system release, title, or app version will behave identically. In particular, a Kindle e-reader may support switching formats without offering the same simultaneous highlighted-text experience documented for Audible apps and Fire tablets. Check the official support details for your device.

Keeping your place—and what to do if sync fails
For an eligible, linked pair, Read & Listen is designed to carry your position between reading and listening, including when you move between supported devices. That digital position sync is not the same as Page Sync, which Audible describes separately for following a print book while listening.
If your place does not update, first confirm that you have the matching eBook and audiobook in the same account and that the title is eligible. Then check that Sync listening position is enabled in the Audible app’s player settings. Also verify that your device and app meet the documented requirements. A mismatch between editions can prevent reliable alignment even when the books appear related. If text and narration continue to drift after those checks, contact Audible support rather than assuming synchronization is guaranteed.

A missing label or mode can have several causes. Work through these checks:

- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
- Confirm both entitlements. Make sure the Kindle eBook and Audible audiobook are in the libraries for the same account.
- Check the exact pairing. Look for Read & Listen on the Audible listing and Add Audible narration on the Kindle eBook page. Similar titles, translations, editions, and abridged versions may not pair.
- Check your marketplace. A title or pairing may not be available in your region, even if another marketplace lists it.
- Check device support. Make sure your device supports the particular task—format switching or in-app highlighted reading—and meets requirements such as Fire OS 8 or later where applicable.
- Update the relevant software. Update Audible, Kindle, or Fire software, then check again.
- Check synchronization settings. Enable Sync listening position if the problem is that your place does not carry over.
- Verify the account before signing out. Confirm the account and library association first; then, if needed, sign out and back in.
If the title is eligible and the issue persists, Audible support can help determine whether the pairing or account entitlement needs attention.
Who is likely to find it useful?
Read & Listen is most practical for people who already use both Audible and Kindle, or who genuinely want both narration and text. It can make it easier to move between listening while commuting or doing another activity and reading on a screen later. Seeing spelling, pronunciation, and sentence structure while listening may also suit some language learners, students, and readers who find visual tracking helpful.
Those are potential uses, not guaranteed learning or health outcomes. Audible’s announcement cited company customer data suggesting that people who already listen while reading consume nearly twice as much content per month as audiobook-only users, and a U.S. survey in which more than nine in ten respondents who read and listen together said the practice improves cognitive retention and comprehension. Those figures are Audible-supplied findings and should not be treated as independent proof that simultaneous reading and listening improves comprehension for everyone.

Is it worth adding the second format?
If you already own both eligible formats, trying Read & Listen is a straightforward way to see whether the synchronized view suits you. If you mainly want audio, compare the cost of adding the Kindle eBook with how often you would use the text; the feature alone may not justify buying a format you do not need. If you mainly want an eBook, compare the Add Audible narration offer, when shown, with the value you place on having professional audio.
The central trade-off is simple: one Audible-centered workflow can make alternating formats more convenient, but the text still depends on a matching Kindle eBook, eligibility is title-specific, and device capabilities vary. Audible’s February 2026 rollout expanded where Immersion Reading can happen; it did not make every book, purchase, or device interchangeable. The original 2026 announcement described a U.S. launch with other markets to follow; a later archive listing showed availability expanded to the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Germany, and France by February 27, 2026. Do not assume that list guarantees availability in every market or for every title.
