Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Audible announced Immersion Reading in the Audible app on February 18, 2026. On eligible titles, a player toggle labeled Listen or Read & Listen lets you hear the professional audiobook narration while Kindle text appears and highlights in sync. The U.S. rollout began first, with the UK, Australia and Germany expected to follow in subsequent months.
This is an Audible-app expansion of an existing cross-format system, not a free text upgrade for every audiobook. You generally need both the matching Kindle eBook and Audible audiobook, and eligibility is determined title by title.
What Audible actually launched
Audible’s announcement moved the simultaneous reading experience into the Audible app. While an eligible audiobook plays, its matching Kindle text is displayed and the spoken words are highlighted as the narrator reads them. Audible said hundreds of thousands of titles were available at launch in English, German, Spanish, Italian and French, although availability varies by title, edition and region. See the February 18, 2026 announcement.
The technology is related to, but not identical with, older Kindle implementations. Amazon did not invent synchronized reading and listening in 2026; the notable change is where the experience is presented and how it is labeled.

Read & Listen, Immersion Reading and Whispersync for Voice
Read & Listen
Read & Listen is Audible’s current umbrella label for using a matching Kindle eBook and audiobook together. It covers switching between formats while preserving your position.
Immersion Reading
Immersion Reading is the simultaneous mode inside that system: the audiobook plays while the Kindle text is shown with word-by-word highlighting. The narration is a professionally recorded audiobook, not Kindle text-to-speech.
Whispersync for Voice
Whispersync for Voice is the former name for the cross-format synchronization feature. Audible’s current help page describes it under Read & Listen: Audible Read & Listen help.
How to turn it on in Audible
- Open the Audible app and sign in with the Amazon account connected to the relevant Kindle library.
- Open an audiobook that shows a Read & Listen badge.
- Start playback.
- Use the toggle above the cover image.
- Select Read & Listen instead of Listen.
- Read the displayed text as the narration plays; the text should advance with the narrator.
There is no account-wide switch. The control appears only when the individual title and your device qualify. In the reading view, Audible says you can change the font, text size, light or dark theme, playback speed and chapter.

Switching between Kindle and Audible
To hand a compatible Kindle book to Audible, open the book in the Kindle app, tap the three-dot More menu, choose Listen on Audible and confirm that Audible should open. In Audible, use the Listen/Read & Listen toggle while the title is playing. The broader synchronization system is designed to preserve your last reading or listening position across supported Kindle and Audible apps and devices.
What you need
- The matching Kindle eBook and Audible audiobook, not merely two editions with similar names.
- Both titles in the same linked Amazon/Audible account or libraries.
- An eligible title whose editions have been synchronized.
- A supported, up-to-date device and app.
- Internet access for the eBook text in normal Audible-app use. Downloaded audio can play offline, but Audible says the text layer streams; some pages may be cached, so this should not be treated as fully offline reading.
Owning an audiobook does not automatically include its Kindle eBook. A membership also is not automatically required: Audible says free or purchased titles can be played in the app when you sign in with an Amazon account. You still need access to both compatible editions.
How to check whether a book qualifies
- Look for a Read & Listen label on the product page.
- On a Kindle eBook page, look for Add Audible narration.
- In Audible Library, look for the Read & Listen badge.
- Use the Audible app’s Read & Listen library filter.
Audible says the app can identify matching Kindle eBooks in your library and surface them with audiobooks. Always rely on the title-page label rather than assuming that any Kindle and Audible versions synchronize.
Title and edition limits
Audible’s author guidance says eligible audiobooks generally need to be unabridged and meet a very high synchronization standard with the Kindle text. Not every book is enabled, and the eligible catalog is expanded over time. Synchronization can be unavailable or imperfect when editions differ substantially, an audiobook is abridged, or a book contains complex layouts, footnotes, illustrations, tables or supplementary material. Regional publisher arrangements can also produce different Kindle and Audible editions. The eligibility guidance is documented at Amazon KDP synchronization documentation.

Supported devices and software
Audible lists the following environments for switching between reading and listening:
- Audible apps on Android and iOS
- Fire tablets running Fire OS 8 or later
- Kindle e-readers from 2022 and later
- Kindle apps on Android, Fire tablets and PC
For simultaneous Immersion Reading in Audible, Audible lists Android and iOS mobile apps, iPad and Android tablets, Fire tablets on Fire OS 8 or later, and Audible for macOS. Current general compatibility guidance says Android devices require Android 9 or later; iPhone and iPad require iOS/iPadOS 18 or later; Mac requires macOS 15 or later and an Apple M1 chip or later; and Apple Watch requires watchOS 11 or later. Requirements can change, so check Audible’s device list.
A device may support switching between formats without supporting the full Audible-app text-and-highlight interface. Do not assume a Kindle e-reader offers the same controls as a phone, tablet or Mac.
How much it costs
The feature itself is not a separate subscription. Your cost depends on obtaining the two editions and, if desired, an Audible plan. The following are U.S. prices observed on August 18, 2026; taxes, promotions, country, account eligibility and app-store billing can change the amount.

| Route | Price or access | Best fit and limitation |
|---|---|---|

| Annual Premium, 24 credits | $229.50/year | For heavier users who expect to use the credits. |
Eligible new users generally receive a 30-day trial that auto-renews unless canceled. Audible membership is separate from Amazon Prime. See Audible membership pricing, Premium details and Standard-plan details. Plus Catalog inclusion does not guarantee that the matching Kindle eBook is included.
Ownership, cancellation and returns
If you buy an audiobook with a Premium credit, Audible describes it as yours to keep after cancellation. Standard-plan monthly selections remain available only while the membership is active, and Plus Catalog titles are tied to active membership and catalog availability.
Be careful with linked discounted purchases. If you return a Kindle eBook bought with an eligible Add Audible narration offer, Audible says the return can automatically refund the linked Audible title and remove it from your Audible library.

The Read & Listen toggle is missing
- Check the product page for the Read & Listen badge or Add Audible narration option.
- Confirm that the Kindle and Audible editions are in the same account.
- Check regional availability and current app/device requirements.
- Update both apps, then close and reopen the title.
Text and audio drift apart
Edition differences, abridged audio, front matter, footnotes, chapter headings or bonus material can create apparent drift. First verify that the title is explicitly eligible. To reset a stale position, open Profile, tap the Settings gear, choose Player, switch Sync device position off, switch it back on, and reconnect to a network.

It works on Kindle but not in Audible
This can be a device-support difference: cross-format switching and simultaneous Audible-app Immersion Reading have separate support lists. Confirm that your device is listed for the specific experience you want.
You cannot use it offline
Downloaded audio may continue offline, but the Audible reading layer normally needs internet access. Cached pages do not make the feature reliably offline.
Who benefits most
- Language learners: visible spelling alongside professional pronunciation.
- Students and reviewers: follow a passage, pause audio and reread without manually finding the location.
- Commuters: move from listening to visual reading while retaining position.
- Readers who prefer combined input: synchronized highlighting can provide a moving visual focus.
Audible reports that combined users consume nearly twice as much content as audiobook-only users, but that is Audible’s own usage and survey claim, not independent evidence that the mode improves comprehension or learning.
What it is not
Read & Listen is not text-to-speech, does not attach an eBook to every Audible purchase, does not guarantee synchronization for every pair of editions, and is not included with Prime by default. It is also different from Page Sync, which uses a phone camera to scan a page in a physical book and jump an Audible recording to the corresponding location; see Audible Page Sync help.
