There is no single publicly documented render resolution for every Pixar movie. Pixar’s published production evidence covers particular shots and pipeline stages: a Pixar super-resolution paper describes production image pairs from 1K to 2K for sampled shots from five named films, and discusses previously finaled 2K renders. That does not establish that every frame in those films—or every Pixar feature—was rendered at exactly 2K.
What resolution does Pixar use?
The clearest direct evidence comes from Pixar Animation Studios’ paper, “Deep Learned Super Resolution for Feature Film Production.” It describes 1K–2K production image pairs rendered with RenderMan, sampled from shots in Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Onward and Soul. The paper also discusses previously finaled 2K renders that could not always be reused because shots might change during production.

This is evidence that 1K–2K images and 2K renders were relevant to those productions. It is not a specification for every shot, a declaration that each film’s final frames all share one raster, or a rule for Pixar’s full filmography. The public sources cited here do not provide a complete list of final render dimensions by film or shot.
Why “2K” can mean different things
A resolution claim needs a workflow stage as well as a number. Rendering calculates a two-dimensional image from a virtual scene; Pixar’s educational explainer puts it simply: “Rendering turns a virtual 3D scene into a 2D image.” Pixar and the Museum of Science’s rendering explainer introduces that process, while Pixar’s USD pipeline article describes final rendered frames as one stage before color timing and editing. RenderMan can also produce pixels earlier in production so departments can evaluate work in visual context.

So a resolution figure might describe a preview, an intermediate production image, a final frame, a theatrical master, a projection system or a consumer release. Those are related stages, but a figure for one does not automatically establish the dimensions used at another.
What the historical 2K reference actually says
Pixar’s 2005 Form 10-K filing says The Incredibles was “the industry’s first to take advantage of the new generation of higher resolution, ‘2K’ digital cinema projectors.” That statement is about theatrical projection, not a direct measurement or specification of the film’s render raster. It should not be used as proof that the movie was rendered at 2K.

Pixar’s timeline describes Toy Story 2 as the first feature film to be entirely created, mastered and exhibited digitally, but that milestone gives no pixel dimensions. Digital creation and exhibition do not, by themselves, answer the render-resolution question.
Does Pixar render every movie in 4K?
The sources do not establish a film-wide 4K rule or a date when Pixar switched its features to 4K rendering. The super-resolution paper’s 1K–2K examples are specific production data; they neither prove that no other resolutions were used nor establish a universal final-output resolution. For any one film, a reliable answer requires a source that identifies the relevant production stage and raster for that title.

Does render time reveal resolution?
No. The Science Behind Pixar gives an example in which a frame from Luca took about 50 hours to render, but does not state that frame’s resolution. Render time alone cannot be converted into pixel dimensions: the cited example supplies no resolution figure, and time is not a substitute for a documented raster.
