In a 2015 preview for the reality series Stewarts & Hamiltons, Ashley Hamilton spoke about his past struggles with drugs and alcohol. His father, George Hamilton, recalled how close the family had come to losing him and told him he was proud. The exchange shows George offering support, but the accessible report does not quote Ashley saying that his father “helped me cope.”

What Ashley and George said in the 2015 preview

People reported on July 23, 2015, that a preview clip from Stewarts & Hamiltons showed Ashley reflecting on a difficult period. “I went through a hard time with drugs and alcohol. So stupid,” he said. George replied: “There are about four times that we almost lost you in your life and you pulled through it.” The “about four times” figure is George’s recollection in the conversation, not a researched statistic. George’s response: concern, pride and encouragement

George did not minimize the danger he remembered. He also urged Ashley to see having another chance at life as a gain rather than a loss: “I’m proud of you. Don’t think of it as a loss, it’s a real gain,” People quoted him as saying. He then added, “I think I’m drunk!”—a humorous turn in an otherwise serious exchange. People’s July 23, 2015 account.

Ashley’s account of eating disorders and substance use

In an earlier disclosure reported by People, Ashley said he had bulimia and anorexia beginning in his teens. He said he believed those struggles came before his drug and alcohol use, and that he used substances to control what he described as food addiction. This is Ashley’s account as reported by People, not an independent diagnosis or clinical explanation by this article. People’s report on Ashley’s eating-disorder disclosure.

What the story does—and does not—establish

The exchange is a historical account of a family conversation shown in a television preview. People also reported that, at the time, Ashley was working on music and at a rehabilitation facility as a sober companion; those details describe 2015, not his current work or health. The report does not establish his present recovery status, treatment, or circumstances.

The wording “helped me cope” is not an exact quote in the accessible People account. It is more accurate to describe the clip as showing George respond to Ashley’s disclosure with concern, encouragement and pride than to present that wording as something Ashley said.
