Ashleigh Banfield is stepping away from her nightly NewsNation program, Banfield, but she is not leaving the network. Under a partnership announced December 12, 2025, Banfield will lead NewsNation’s digital true-crime coverage, while continuing to contribute legal analysis and commentary on major trials, criminal investigations, and breaking crime news.
Her final edition of Banfield is expected in January 2026. NewsNation said the move will also bring material from Banfield’s podcast, Drop Dead Serious with Ashleigh Banfield, to the network’s digital and streaming platforms.
A change in role, not a departure from NewsNation
NewsNation and journalist Ashleigh Banfield described the change as a new partnership focused on expanding the network’s true-crime presence across digital platforms. Banfield will step away from producing and hosting the nightly live television program that bears her name and take a leading role in the network’s digital crime coverage.
The network’s announcement does not say that Banfield was fired, forced out, or leaving because of ratings. The available information supports a professional transition: her principal focus is moving from a nightly linear-TV program to digital true crime and podcasting, while her relationship with NewsNation continues. NewsNation’s parent company, Nexstar Media Group, described the new arrangement as part of a multiplatform expansion.

Banfield joined NewsNation in spring 2021 and had hosted the weeknight 10 p.m. program since the network’s early years. In February 2024, NewsNation announced a multiyear contract renewal that also highlighted her work on the true-crime and justice series Crime Nation. Her next role keeps that subject-matter expertise at the center of her work, but changes where and how much of it will be delivered.
What Banfield’s new digital role involves
NewsNation said Banfield will lead a true-crime digital vertical built around reporting, storytelling, and commentary on criminal cases and investigations. The network also said she will remain a regular contributor, offering legal analysis on significant trials, criminal investigations, and breaking true-crime news.
That means Banfield’s work will not be limited to a single nightly program. Her continuing television appearances are expected to be tied to major developments that require legal context or her experience covering crime and courts, while the new digital operation will provide a broader home for true-crime programming.
However, NewsNation’s announcement did not specify the final name of the digital vertical, its exact launch date, its staffing, publishing schedule, or whether it will operate as a standalone website, streaming channel, or a combination of products. It is therefore more accurate to describe the digital operation as an announced initiative rather than a fully documented, already-established channel.

A central part of the transition is Banfield’s podcast, Drop Dead Serious with Ashleigh Banfield. The podcast’s official website describes it as a true-crime program focused on mysteries, injustice, and criminal cases, with Banfield drawing on her background in crime and legal reporting.

NewsNation said content from the podcast will become available through the network’s platforms. The announcement does not fully explain whether existing episodes will be repackaged, whether new programs will be produced under a NewsNation brand, or how the podcast’s existing identity will relate to the new digital vertical. Those distribution and branding details remain to be announced.
According to figures supplied by NewsNation and Nexstar, the podcast launched in early 2025, reached Apple Podcasts’ top 10, and accumulated more than 30 million views and nearly 300,000 subscribers in less than a year. Those numbers are company-provided promotional figures, not independently audited audience measurements, so they should be understood in that context.
The podcast gives NewsNation an existing true-crime brand and audience rather than requiring the network to build a digital franchise entirely from scratch. It also gives Banfield a format that can extend beyond the fixed structure of a live hour: episodes, video clips, interviews, case explainers, and breaking-news updates can potentially be distributed across several platforms. The exact content mix, though, has not been announced.
What happens to the 10 p.m. hour?
NewsNation said rotating anchors would fill the 10 p.m. Eastern hour after Banfield’s final program and until a permanent replacement was selected.
The network later announced that Katie Pavlich, a Fox News contributor, would join NewsNation and anchor a new political-news program in the time slot in early 2026. That program is intended to replace Banfield as the hour’s regular offering, according to TV Insider’s report on the programming change.

The program’s run is reported to end in January 2026. One secondary program reference identifies January 16, 2026, as the final date, but that precise date should be treated cautiously unless confirmed by an official NewsNation schedule or contemporaneous network announcement. January 2026 is the more firmly supported timing in the available primary-source material.
Why NewsNation is making the move
The official explanation centers on audience behavior and multiplatform expansion. NewsNation said Banfield’s credibility and storytelling experience made her a natural person to build a digital destination for true-crime audiences. Banfield said she wanted to bring the momentum of Drop Dead Serious to NewsNation’s growing digital audience and help shape the network’s broader true-crime strategy.

The logic is straightforward: true-crime audiences already consume reporting through podcasts, online video, social platforms, and streaming services as well as conventional television. Moving Banfield into a digital leadership role allows NewsNation to connect its television news operation with a subject area that can support longer-form storytelling and on-demand viewing.
That strategic interpretation is supported by the announced podcast integration, but the network has not published enough operational detail to judge the size or commercial scope of the new vertical. The partnership’s financial terms, editorial staffing, production plans, and specific distribution arrangements have not been disclosed.
What viewers should expect
- The nightly show is ending: Banfield is expected to host her final edition of Banfield in January 2026.
- Banfield remains connected to NewsNation: She will continue as a contributor on major trials, investigations, and breaking true-crime stories.
- The 10 p.m. hour is changing format: Rotating anchors were planned as an interim measure, followed by Katie Pavlich’s new political-news program.
- The podcast is moving closer to the network: Content from Drop Dead Serious with Ashleigh Banfield will be made available on NewsNation’s platforms.
- The digital vertical is still not fully defined publicly: Its final name, launch structure, schedule, and complete programming slate remain unclear.
What the announcement does—and does not—mean
It means Banfield is leaving the host’s chair on a nightly prime-time program and taking on a broader digital true-crime assignment. It does not mean she has left NewsNation altogether.

It also does not establish that the change resulted from poor ratings, a dispute with the network, or a forced exit. Those explanations have not been stated in the announcement and should not be presented as fact. The documented change is a shift in role and platform, with Banfield continuing to provide legal and crime coverage for NewsNation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor NewsNation, the move represents an effort to connect a national cable-news operation with digital video and podcast audiences. For Banfield, it brings her established crime-reporting identity and the Drop Dead Serious brand into a larger network strategy. Whether that develops into a standalone NewsNation destination, a collection of programs, or a primarily podcast-led operation will become clearer when the network announces more details.
