Before that interview, Ashanti appeared to allude to the dispute in a verse on the “Gotta Move On” remix, with references to obsession and the passage of twenty years, as REVOLT reported. The verse was presented as an apparent response; it should not be treated as an explicit identification of Gotti as its target.
Did Ashanti say Irv Gotti was her boyfriend?
No. Asked about their relationship on IRL, Ashanti said, “Let’s clear this up. We’re not going to say ‘relationship,’” and described them as people who “dealt with each other.” She answered “Never” when asked whether Gotti was her boyfriend or she was his girlfriend, according to the Los Angeles Times.

She also challenged his broader account, saying, “Irv has flat out lied about a lot of things.” Those statements describe Ashanti’s version of events; the coverage documents conflicting accounts rather than independently resolving every detail of their personal history.
What did Ashanti allege about her work at Murder Inc.?
Ashanti said Gotti was upset after she began dating Nelly and alleged that he barred her from recording at the studio and told others not to record with her. The Los Angeles Times and Complex reported her account. These are allegations she made in the interview, not independently established findings.

Why did Ashanti criticize the Murder Inc. documentary?
Ashanti said she did not participate in Gotti’s documentary about Murder Inc. Complex reported that she had been contacted but chose not to take part, and that her presence in the five-episode documentary came through archival footage. She criticized how the project presented the label’s legacy and her experience within it.

Why did Ashanti say she wanted to speak publicly?
In a later interview with The Shade Room, Ashanti said she wanted to set the record straight and address women’s treatment in the music industry. REVOLT quoted her saying, “But I also felt like I had to make a statement, and I had to stand up and be cognizant of how women are treated in this industry.”
The Los Angeles Times reported on October 26, 2022, that Gotti had not responded to Ashanti’s interview at that time. That is a dated report, not a statement about whether he responded later.
