Aruna Roy’s The Personal Is Political connects the intimate experience of hardship with the public structures that shape it. HarperCollins India’s 2024 description presents the memoir as a personal account woven through Roy’s fifty-year engagement with public action in India—and her effort to put ideological convictions into practice. Its emphasis is not only on commitment, but on learning and acting alongside others.

What is The Personal Is Political about?

The memoir’s organizing idea is that experiences often treated as private problems can have political dimensions. HarperCollins India’s description names poverty, discrimination, inequality and corruption, and frames Roy’s life as a search for ways to translate convictions into public action. The book is therefore presented as both a personal journey and an account of engagement with wider social questions—not as a claim that one individual acts alone.

The title invokes a feminist slogan. Roy told Hindustan Times in July 2024, “My life and work have been inspired and defined by this feminist slogan.” Anjali Chauhan’s 2024 review in Scroll interprets the title through the book’s connections between gender, personal experience and political life.

Why did Roy leave the IAS?

Roy’s transition from the Indian Administrative Service to grassroots work is one of the personal turning points associated with the memoir. In a July 2024 interview with Hindustan Times, she explained her decision in terms of the work she wanted to do: “After seven years, I decided to go where I could work without hierarchy, fight corruption and the arbitrary use of power with independence and continuity, while using the law and the constitution for people trapped in multiple layers of oppression.” This is Roy’s account of her own reasons, rather than a general verdict on every civil service institution.

How did MKSS connect local grievances to the RTI movement?

The Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) is essential context for understanding Roy’s public work. A National Human Rights Commission educational publication says MKSS was formally constituted on May Day, 1990, and describes Jan Sunwais—public hearings—as milestones in the movement for the right to information.

The NHRC account describes how access to records and a village dispute over grazing land brought public scrutiny to local concerns. It also recounts an underpaid villager’s complaint about manipulated muster rolls leading to the first public hearing in Kot Kirana. The method matters: records made available for scrutiny can help turn an individual complaint into a question the community can examine together. This history does not mean one hearing, or one person, alone produced the national law.

A 2022 interview in CMS’s Transparency Review connects Roy’s work with the Right to Information Act 2005, the Right to Work campaign and the Right to Food movement. That profile reports that Roy received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 2000. These details place the memoir’s account within a broader history of people-led campaigns and institutional change.

Why are empathy and collective work central to the story?

The book’s publisher description emphasizes a public-action journey, while MKSS’s catalog presents its work in collective terms. Together, these descriptions suggest a lens focused not on a solitary reformer, but on convictions tested in practice and work carried out with others. Roy has also spoken about the importance of learning with rural communities. In a March 2025 interview with The Week, she recalled, “There has been the joy of living, working and learning with people,”

Empathy in this context is not simply sympathy from a distance. The account of public hearings shows how listening, examining records and making claims visible can give people a shared way to question power. The NHRC publication also quotes the Supreme Court’s discussion in S P Gupta vs Union of India (1981 Supp. SCC 87): “Where a society has chosen to accept democracy as its credal faith, it is elementary that the citizens ought to know what their government is doing.”

What does Roy say about writing and communication?

Public action depends on reaching people beyond the immediate setting of a campaign. In a 2025 interview with the Purple Pencil Project, associated with the Jaipur Literature Festival, Roy described writing as an extension of activists’ effort to communicate with people they cannot reach through travel and face-to-face speech. She said, “When you write, you don’t know who it will reach. That uncertainty is frightening. But you tie your courage to your waist and carry on.”

In the same interview, Roy reflected on the scale of injustice: “If you see it as a monolith, it’s impossible.” The remark offers a useful way to understand the memoir’s emphasis on sustained action: large structures can be approached through specific experiences, relationships and collective efforts.

How is the memoir different from The RTI Story?

These are distinct books with different stated purposes. The Personal Is Political is described as Roy’s personal narrative alongside her public-action journey. The RTI Story: Power to the People, credited to Aruna Roy and the MKSS collective, is presented in the organization’s catalog as a history of the campaign that developed into a people’s movement.
