The Associated Press reported that Musk offered no public evidence for it. Publicly released Epstein-related material does mention Trump, but the sources described here do not establish Musk’s separate assertion that Trump’s presence in unreleased files was why records had been withheld.
What did Elon Musk say about Trump and the Epstein files?
On June 5, 2025, after a disagreement over a federal spending and tax bill, Trump said that ending Musk’s government subsidies and contracts was a way to save money. Musk responded on social media: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”
The post made two claims: that Trump was in Epstein-related files and that this was the reason records had not been released. The Associated Press reported that Musk supplied no evidence for the accusation. The White House did not answer PolitiFact’s direct question about whether Trump is mentioned in the files; spokesperson Karoline Leavitt instead characterized Musk’s outburst as a reaction to his dissatisfaction with the bill.
The accusation came as the political alliance between Musk and Trump was publicly breaking down. That dispute explains the context of Musk’s post, but does not by itself prove or disprove its factual claims.

What does “in the Epstein files” mean?
“Epstein files” is a broad label, not the name of one definitive document. The records span investigations, prosecutions, court proceedings, Freedom of Information Act releases and government disclosures. The Department of Justice’s portal organizes material into data sets, court records, FOIA records and prior disclosures. It also describes redactions made to protect victims and comply with court rules and statutes.
A reference to someone in a record can mean only that the person’s name appears or is mentioned. It does not automatically mean the record accuses that person of misconduct, that an accusation is corroborated, or that wrongdoing has been established.

What publicly released material mentions Trump?
The Associated Press has reported that previously released documents include mentions of Trump. One example it described is a 2016 deposition in which an accuser recounted spending several hours with Jeffrey Epstein at Trump’s Atlantic City casino. According to AP’s account, the witness did not say whether she met Trump and did not accuse him of wrongdoing.
That account establishes a limited point about a previously released record. It does not establish Musk’s claim about unreleased files, or his assertion that Trump’s supposed presence explains why records were withheld.

How did the government’s releases develop?
February 2025: first phase
On February 27, 2025, the Justice Department announced a first phase of declassified files. The department said the material largely consisted of documents that had been leaked previously but not formally released by the U.S. government, and that it intended to review and redact further records to protect victims. Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the release as one that “sheds light on Epstein’s extensive network and begins to provide the public with long overdue accountability.” That was Bondi’s characterization of the release.
January 2026: additional publication
On January 30, 2026, the Justice Department announced publication of more than 3 million additional responsive pages. DOJ said that, together with earlier releases, nearly 3.5 million pages had been released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The department also said this additional publication included more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images; those figures describe the January 2026 publication, not the total content of all records.

What cautions apply when interpreting the records?
- Check what kind of material it is. An official court or government record is different from material submitted by a member of the public and included among responsive records.
- Separate mention from accusation and proof. A name in a file is not, by itself, an allegation of conduct; an allegation is not the same as corroboration; neither alone establishes wrongdoing.
- Keep the record’s date and context attached to it. A deposition, a later government disclosure and a public submission have different procedural contexts and evidentiary weight.
- Account for redactions and sensitive information. DOJ’s portal says some information is redacted to protect victims and meet legal requirements.
DOJ said its January 2026 production could include fake or falsely submitted images, documents or videos because responsive material sent to the FBI by members of the public was included. The department also characterized some submitted claims against Trump as unfounded and false. Those statements are DOJ’s description of the production, not an independent review establishing that every item—or every mention of Trump—is false.

No. The available reporting documents Musk’s allegation and the existence of previously released records that mention Trump, but does not establish that Trump’s supposed presence in unreleased files caused records to be withheld. The sources described here also do not identify what specific record or private information, if any, Musk relied on. Without that evidence, his explanation remains an allegation rather than an established account of the release decisions.
