The Seiko H558-5000 is the vintage analog-digital diver commonly nicknamed the “Arnie,” after its appearances in films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. IMWDb catalogs it in Commando, Raw Deal, The Running Man and Predator. It is a discontinued 1982 quartz watch—not the same model as Seiko’s modern solar “Arnie” watches.
What watch did Schwarzenegger wear in Predator?
The watch identified in IMWDb’s Predator entry is the Seiko H558-5000, worn by Schwarzenegger’s character, Dutch. IMWDb also catalogs the reference in Commando (1985), Raw Deal (1986) and The Running Man (1987). These are database identifications, not proof of a Seiko endorsement or payment to Schwarzenegger. IMWDb’s film and watch listings were last modified September 5, 2026.

Fratello gives a broader list that also includes Twins, but that film does not appear in the IMWDb catalog reviewed here. The exact reference worn on screen is not entirely settled: Fratello describes the H558-5000 as the Japanese domestic-market model and says Schwarzenegger most likely wore the related international-market H558-5009. Treat that as a qualified identification, rather than assuming every screen appearance can be verified as the H558-5000 specifically. Fratello’s Seiko 1980s guide also discusses orange H558-500a variants.
What makes the H558-5000 distinctive?
Introduced in 1982, the H558-5000 is a quartz hybrid diver: it combines conventional analog hands with a small LCD display. Its cataloged functions include an alarm and chronograph. IMWDb gives the steel case as about 45 mm and the water-resistance rating as 150 m; Fratello and a specialist vintage listing describe the case as approximately 45–46 mm or nearly 46 mm. The slight difference in stated diameter may reflect measurement conventions.

The LCD sits below the hands and is tilted, with its 12 o’clock side higher. Seiko’s heritage page says that angle makes the time easier to read. Seiko calls the 1982 model its “Hybrid Diver’s Watch” and describes it as “the world’s first watch with both an alarm and chronograph.” That is Seiko’s historical claim about the combination of those two functions, not a claim that it was the first hybrid watch of any kind. Seiko’s heritage history shows the model in the company’s own account of its watchmaking history.
Is the modern “Arnie” the same watch?
No. “Arnie” is also used for modern Seiko designs that recall the original, but the Prospex PADI SNJ035P1 is a different watch with a solar H855 movement. Seiko Boutique UK’s specification sheet lists its key details alongside the vintage H558 reference:
| Feature | Vintage H558-5000 | Modern Prospex PADI SNJ035P1 |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Quartz H558 hybrid; analog hands and LCD | Solar H855 |
| Case diameter | About 45–46 mm, depending on source and measurement | 46.92 mm |
| Lug width | 22 mm | 22 mm |
| Water resistance | 150 m | 20 bar |
| Availability | Discontinued; typically encountered on the vintage market | Availability varies by region; check Seiko Boutique UK for current status |
| Price | Current value not established by the sources cited here | £570 recommended retail price including VAT on Seiko Boutique UK’s specification sheet; verify current price |
The modern model’s other listed specifications include a 50.94 mm case length, 14.19 mm thickness, stainless-steel case, silicone strap, Hardlex crystal and stated accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. These figures describe the SNJ035P1, not the vintage H558. Seiko Boutique UK’s SNJ035P1 specification sheet is the source for those modern-model details.

What to check before buying a vintage H558
Because the H558 is discontinued, buying one is generally a vintage-market decision. A working analog display does not by itself establish that the LCD or other functions work. Ask for clear photographs and, where possible, a demonstration of both displays and the alarm and chronograph. Request service records and ask about battery changes, storage and any exposure to moisture.
- Check the shroud: Look for cracks, damage or brittle material.
- Check the displays and functions: Confirm that both analog hands and LCD operate, along with the functions claimed by the seller.
- Ask about moisture and battery history: Hub City Vintage warns that moisture intrusion or a dead battery left in place can damage the movement. This is a specialist’s observation, not a diagnosis of every non-working H558.
- Confirm parts and fit: The cited vintage example has 22 mm lugs and uses a reproduction Z-22-style flat-vent strap. That does not establish that this strap was original equipment on every reference or example. Verify the exact watch’s lug width and distinguish reproductions from original Seiko parts.
Hub City Vintage’s archived listing describes one example serviced on December 10, 2021; its condition notes are useful buying context, not a factory service manual. Read the archived H558-5000 listing.
