She wore it for the ceremony’s opening musical medley with Cynthia Erivo—not on the red carpet, where she arrived in a separate pale pink gown.
What were the ‘Wizard of Oz’ Easter eggs on Ariana Grande’s red Oscars dress?
The most explicit reference was a three-dimensional stiletto protruding from the back of the gown, evoking Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Grande told Vogue that she had asked for the design to pay tribute to the slippers and Judy Garland, who played Dorothy in the 1939 film.

“I had expressed that I wanted to pay tribute to the ruby slippers and to Judy Garland with this dress, and Daniel really just created the most stunning piece of Ozian art from there,” Grande said. The gown was a Schiaparelli bustier ball gown by creative director Daniel Roseberry, finished with a flowing tulle train.
How the gown connected to the Oscars performance
The red look appeared during the 97th Academy Awards opening tribute, which linked three Oz-related musicals: The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz and Wicked. Grande sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Erivo performed “Home,” and the pair sang “Defying Gravity” together, according to the Associated Press.

Grande also described a personal connection to the song: “The Wizard of Oz, and especially ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ has been a very special to me since I was a little girl. My grandpa always asked me to sing it, and it has always been a part of my life, becoming even more meaningful to me over the years.” She told Vogue that the performance was intended as “a tribute to Oz, and to the beautiful women and witches who have come before us.”
What was on the gown besides the slipper?
Vogue reported that the red dress carried more than 150,000 beads, sequins and Swarovski crystals. Country & Town House also reported more than 150,000 embellishments, but described the materials differently. The figure is therefore best understood as Vogue’s reported count, not as a separately confirmed inventory of every material.

Grande’s red Oz-inspired performance gown was not the pale pink Schiaparelli look she wore earlier on the red carpet. Vogue described the pink gown as Glinda-inspired, with a silhouette drawing on a Giacometti lamp. The contrast reflects two different moments of the evening: a character-inspired carpet appearance and a ruby-red costume-like tribute for the opening medley.
