Respect is a 2021 music-centered biographical drama starring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin. It follows Franklin’s rise from singing in her father’s church choir to international fame, and it gets key musical context right: Otis Redding recorded “Respect” first, in 1965, before Franklin’s version followed in 1967. But the available reporting does not establish a scene-by-scene accuracy verdict. The clearest way to assess the film is to separate documented context from dramatization and from details that remain unverified.
What is the film Respect about?
Directed by Liesl Tommy and written by Tracey Scott Wilson, Respect traces Franklin’s path from her father’s church choir to international stardom. The story includes her early life, her breakthrough as a recording artist, and her return to gospel with the 1972 album Amazing Grace, as described in the Los Angeles Times.

Apple TV lists the 2021 film at 2 hours 25 minutes, with Hudson as Franklin, Forest Whitaker as C. L. Franklin, and Marlon Wayans as Ted White. Its catalog entry carries a PG-13 rating and notes mature thematic content, strong language including racial epithets, violence, suggestive material, and smoking. Catalog details can vary by region or change over time; these are the details on Apple TV’s U.S. listing.
What does Respect get right about the music?
Otis Redding recorded “Respect” first
Otis Redding recorded “Respect” in 1965; Franklin’s version came two years later, in 1967, according to CBS News. The chronology matters: Franklin did not originate the song, but her recording transformed it into a defining statement associated with her voice and with its era.
#1 Best Overall
Hudson told CBS News that Franklin took a man’s song and made it her own, calling that transformation powerful in the context of a Black woman speaking boldly during the civil rights era. That is Hudson’s interpretation of the song’s significance, not evidence that every scene built around it reproduces a specific historical event.
The Muscle Shoals sessions are part of the story
The film includes Franklin’s recording of “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” at FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a session CBS News describes as a breakthrough moment. The Los Angeles Times also reports on the film’s recreation of the Muscle Shoals sessions. Those sources support the broad historical importance of the recording and the film’s focus on it, but they do not verify every detail of the scenes as staged.
How did Jennifer Hudson come to play Aretha Franklin?
Hudson said Franklin chose her after seeing her performance in Dreamgirls. In a CBS News interview, Hudson recalled Franklin telling her, “Young lady, I’ve made my decision. It is you who I want to play me, and don’t say nothing.” This is Hudson’s recollection of a private conversation, not an independently recorded quotation.
Hudson’s preparation included acting and dialect coaching and learning piano, according to the Los Angeles Times. It reports that Hudson and other cast members sang live on set rather than lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. Director Liesl Tommy said she wanted music “front and center,” aiming to convey both Franklin’s vocal power and her delicacy on screen.

Hudson also discussed Franklin’s involvement in choosing songs for her to sing in an interview included with the Apple Music soundtrack listing. That account describes Hudson’s relationship to the role; it is not independent proof of the film’s historical fidelity.
What does the soundtrack add?
RESPECT (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is listed by Apple Music as a 2021 Jennifer Hudson album. It includes “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home),” an original song co-written by Carole King, Hudson, and Jamie Hartman. In a Fall 2021 SCORE magazine interview, King described drawing on her experience of working during the height of Franklin’s career, while Hudson spoke about her personal connection to Franklin and her understanding of the film’s narrative.

Can the film’s historical accuracy be judged scene by scene?
Not from the accessible reporting cited here. CBS News and the Los Angeles Times establish broad context about Franklin’s music, the Muscle Shoals sessions, the film’s scope, and Hudson’s performance. They do not provide a comprehensive audit of individual scenes, dialogue, or chronology.
A Detroit Free Press fact-check republished by Yahoo surfaced in search results under a headline about what the biopic gets right and wrong, but the page could not be reviewed. Its specific scene-level claims therefore cannot be responsibly repeated as established fact. For a disputed moment, look for accessible reporting or a primary historical record that addresses that event directly; do not treat a dramatic scene as proof simply because it appears in the film.
Quick Recap
How to assess a disputed scene
- Check chronology: Compare the date and order of events against reliable records, especially when the film compresses years of a career into a continuous story.
- Check who was present: Seek a source that directly identifies the people involved, rather than inferring attendance from the film’s casting or staging.
- Check the music credits and recording history: Distinguish the origins of a song from the later recording or performance that made it famous.
- Look for a documented basis: Decide whether the scene is presented as a verifiable event or is a dramatic construction. The sources cited above do not settle every such question about Respect.
