There isn’t just one Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? game to review. The older Hasbro board game is the screen-free choice for a small group; the 2022 licensed quiz game is designed for couch co-op on supported platforms. They serve different kinds of game night, and neither should be confused with the older Make the Grade video game.
Which Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? game is worth considering?
For a family or group that wants trivia without a screen, the 2007 Hasbro board game is the clearest fit. For automated questions, voiced presentation and a larger advertised question bank, consider the 2022 digital game. The available evidence here consists of product listings and review snapshots, not hands-on testing, so this is a comparison of what each product offers rather than a gameplay verdict from direct play.
| Version | Format and group size | Questions and features | What the evidence says about reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hasbro board game (2007) | Tabletop; listed for 2–4 players, suggested age 8+ | 300 question cards; physical boards, markers, pawns, tokens, pencils and a card-reader sleeve | BoardGameGeek records community ratings and comments, not a representative consumer survey |
| Licensed digital quiz game (2022) | Digital couch co-op; listings describe 1–8 players | More than 6,800 English-voiced questions; PlayStation listing also describes 24 subjects, multiple-choice and true-or-false challenges, and minigames | Steam and PlayStation Store snapshots show different scores and populations; they are not directly comparable |
| Make the Grade (2008) | Older PC and console video game; GameSpot lists PC, PS2, DS, Xbox 360 and Wii | Not stated in the cited GameSpot listing | GameSpot’s record lists a 7.5 review score; it is not a review of the 2022 game |
How does the 2007 board game play as a purchase?
BoardGameGeek’s record reproduces a Hasbro description of players answering grade-school questions and using “cheat” or “save” mechanics. The listed contents—300 question cards, two boards, markers, pawns, tokens, pencils and a card-reader sleeve—make it a conventional group trivia activity rather than a screen-based adaptation. Its 2–4 player listing makes it a better match for a small table than a large party.
Because this is an older edition, a secondhand copy may not include every piece. Check for the question cards and components before buying; missing cards directly reduce the game’s usable question pool. The listing’s suggested age is 8+, which is a product recommendation, not a guarantee that every question will suit every child.

What does the 2022 digital game offer?
The Steam listing identifies Massive Miniteam as developer and HandyGames and THQ Nordic Mobile as publishers, and gives August 23, 2022 as the release date. Its publisher description advertises more than 6,800 fully English-voiced questions and couch co-op for 1–8 players. The PlayStation Store description also cites more than 6,800 questions and 24 subjects, with multiple-choice and true-or-false challenges and minigames. These are listing claims, not an independently measured count of distinct or error-free questions.
Platform and play-mode details depend on the store listing: PlayStation lists PS4 and PS5 versions and offline play, while Nintendo’s US store lists a Switch edition and an Extra Credit add-on. Those listings establish that versions are present on those storefronts; they do not establish current price, stock, or the quality of each edition. Check the relevant store page for current availability and edition details.

What do player ratings say—and what don’t they say?
As observed on October 7, 2026, Steam showed 63% positive from 149 reviews. The PlayStation Store page showed an average of 3.46 out of 5 from 197 ratings. These are time-sensitive snapshots from different storefronts, with different rating systems and user populations, so the figures should not be treated as a head-to-head score or a stable measure of quality.
A PlayStation user review reported that a measurement answer was marked wrong. That is one person’s report, not a verified or broadly established defect. The storefront page does not by itself confirm the answer, the question’s wording, or whether the issue affects other players.

- PLAY YOUR OWN LIVE TV QUIZ SHOW AT HOME: Outsmarted turns family game night into a real quiz show, with the free app playing host and putting everyone in the hot seat against the clock. Choose your game length, pick teams or go solo, and let the app run the whole show. It reads out the questions, keeps score and builds the tension, so nobody sits out to referee. Beat the buzzer or get Outsmarted. This is game night with the buzz of a real TV studio right in your living room.
- KIDS VS TEENS VS ADULTS, NOW ANYONE CAN WIN: The game reads each player's age and adjusts question difficulty automatically, so a nine year old and a grandparent get a fair fight. Kids get their level, teens get theirs, adults get the tough ones. Play with 2 to 24 people, from a quiet night for two to a full house at Christmas. Everyone stays in it to the final question, and for once the grown-ups do not get the easy ride. A level playing field that keeps the whole room competing.
- 10,000+ QUESTIONS THAT STAY RIGHT UP TO DATE: The 2026 Edition packs more than 10,000 multimedia questions across ten core categories, and the content never goes stale. Fresh topical questions are added regularly and the Breaking News category refreshes every week, so if it happened recently it could come up tonight. From Quick Thinking to Back to School and Lifestyle and Culture, the mix stays balanced for the whole family and current with the world outside your door.
- WORKS WITH THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Run the free app on iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, or a Windows 10 and 11 laptop. Connect up to six devices as handheld buzzers so every team gets their own controller, then stream the whole show to almost any Smart TV for the full big-screen effect. A folding stand for your phone or tablet is in the box. There is nothing extra to buy to start playing, and every future app update is included at no cost, so the game keeps getting better over time.
- JOIN OVER ONE MILLION FAMILIES PLAYING OUTSMARTED: This is the game families reach for when they want a real night together, off the silent scrolling and solo screens. It gets three generations laughing, groaning and competing around one board. A personal license key and free lifetime support come with every copy, plus a growing library of free bonus categories in the app. Real questions, real laughs, real time together. That is why the Outsmarted community keeps growing.
How does the older Make the Grade game fit in?
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader: Make the Grade is a separate, older game, not another name for the 2022 release. GameSpot’s listing records an October 15, 2008 first-release date, THQ as publisher, and PC, PS2, DS, Xbox 360 and Wii as platforms; its record gives the game a 7.5 score. That score belongs to the 2008 title. The listing does not establish whether those versions work on current hardware or are currently available to buy.
What is the franchise’s connection to the TV show?
The US show premiered on FOX in 2007, with Jeff Foxworthy hosting the version described in Hasbro’s 2011 newsroom item. Hasbro said 309 half-hour episodes had been acquired by The Hub. That history explains the games’ quiz-show premise, but it does not tell you where the show can be streamed now.
