Mostly no—but partly yes. Spotify’s current support documentation says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, subject to market, device, song and licensing restrictions. The important exception is offline lyrics: lyrics saved with downloaded music are being rolled out as a Premium capability. So a Premium prompt does not prove that Spotify has put all lyrics behind a paywall.

Spotify’s support page says availability can vary by country, device, track and rights-holder agreement. A Premium subscription therefore cannot create lyrics that Spotify does not have permission to display.

What changed in February 2026?
Translations expanded
Spotify announced broader lyric translations for tracks where translations are available. This update was described for both Free and Premium listeners; it does not make ordinary lyrics a paid-only feature.

Lyric previews appeared in more places
On supported phones and tablets, a short lyric preview can appear beneath album artwork or a Canvas video. Spotify says this preview is available to Free and Premium users as the rollout reaches accounts.
Offline lyrics became a Premium feature
When a Premium subscriber downloads music for offline listening, Spotify is rolling out the ability to save the associated lyrics as well. That is different from opening lyrics while online. Rollout timing, song catalog and device support can still vary, and downloading a track does not guarantee that it has lyrics.

How to view lyrics
Phone
- Start playing a song.
- Tap the Now Playing bar at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down to Lyrics.
- Tap the lyrics panel for a full-screen view.
Tablet
Use the same Now Playing route. Spotify notes that some tablet layouts require you to tap the album artwork in the side menu before the lyrics panel appears.
Desktop app or web player
- Play a song.
- Click the Lyrics control at the bottom of the player.
The control may not appear when lyrics are unavailable for that track, device or account.

How to control lyric previews
- Open the Now Playing view.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Lyrics to turn the preview off or on.
Spotify’s newsroom announcement calls the setting Lyrics Off. The wording can differ by platform, app version or rollout stage.
Why a Free user might see a Premium prompt
A paywall message can have several explanations, and Spotify has not announced a single permanent lyric limit for every Free account.

- Account or market restriction: Spotify may apply a local limit or test to particular accounts or countries.
- Offline access: You may be trying to read lyrics while the device is offline or after downloading music. That is the Premium-oriented use case announced in 2026.
- Song, device or region limitation: The track may lack licensed lyrics, or the current device may not support the feature.
- Staged rollout: Lyrics controls can be enabled server-side, so two people with the same app version may see different behavior.
- Temporary app or server problem: A missing panel is not automatically evidence of a subscription requirement.
On January 1, 2026, a user posted on Spotify’s Community site that their account displayed “you’ve hit your lyrics limit for this month.” That is evidence of an individual report, not proof of a universal rule. Spotify’s Community post is available at this page.

Why people remember a Spotify lyrics paywall
- 2023: Reports described limited-market testing of restrictions on lyrics for some Free listeners.
- May 2024: Some Free users reportedly encountered a limit of three lyric views per month.
- July 30, 2024: Spotify expanded Free access after complaints; it did not publish a permanent replacement number. The history is reported by TechCrunch.
- January 2026: At least one Community user reported a renewed monthly-limit message.
- February 4, 2026: Spotify announced Free/Premium lyric previews and translations alongside the Premium rollout for offline lyrics.
Older screenshots and articles explain why the claim keeps resurfacing, but the 2024 test does not establish a current, worldwide paywall.

What to try when lyrics are missing
- Check whether the song has lyrics by trying another well-known track.
- Update Spotify from your device’s app store.
- Force-close Spotify and open it again.
- Sign out, then sign back in.
- Test the same account on a phone, desktop app and web player.
- Check whether lyrics fail only when the device is offline.
- Read the exact wording of any prompt. A monthly-limit message points to an account or experiment issue; a missing Lyrics button can indicate catalog, device or licensing limits.
- If Spotify explicitly says you have reached a monthly limit, wait for the stated reset or contact Spotify Support.
Do not assume Premium will solve missing lyrics caused by licensing, regional rights, unsupported hardware or a software fault.
Is Premium worth paying for lyrics?
If you only want to read lyrics while streaming online, Spotify’s current support documentation does not make Premium necessary. Premium is more relevant if you also want downloaded music and lyrics for offline listening, ad-free playback or other paid-plan features. Spotify’s U.S. plan details are published at its official Premium page; prices and promotions vary by country and can change.
If another service is being considered because lyrics remain unavailable, verify its current policy for your country and device. No service should be assumed to provide every song’s lyrics without catalog or licensing exceptions.

Spotify lyrics are not generally Premium-only. Free users can usually view online lyrics, previews and available translations. The part that is Premium-oriented is offline lyrics saved with downloaded music, and some accounts may still encounter limits or experiments. Check the track, platform, connection state and exact message before subscribing solely for lyrics.
