The article compares Charlotte’s position with Prince Harry’s account of his own experience in his memoir Spare. It does not document a public policy or a direct statement from William and Catherine that they are specifically protecting Charlotte from what Harry describes.
What does it mean that Charlotte is “the spare”?
Charlotte is the second child of William and Catherine, after George and before Louis. PEOPLE’s May 7, 2025, report noted that she turned 10 on May 2 that year and described her position in relation to George, the elder sibling ahead of her in the line of succession.
“Spare” is a shorthand for that place behind an heir. It can suggest a formal family hierarchy, but it does not by itself establish how a sibling feels, how parents treat their children, or what role the younger child will take on as an adult. PEOPLE’s story frames Charlotte’s position as a possible source of pressure; it does not report that she has described feeling that way herself.
What did Harry say about being the spare?
In Spare, Harry recounts his own feelings about growing up behind William. He wrote: “I was the shadow, the support, the Plan B. I was brought into the world in case something happened to Willy.”

He also described feeling overlooked: “My family had declared me a nullity. The Spare. I didn’t complain about it, but I didn’t need to dwell on it either. Far better, in my mind, not to think about certain facts… But no one gave a damn whom I traveled with; the Spare could always be spared.” These are Harry’s first-person recollections in his memoir, not independent evidence of Charlotte’s experience or a prediction of what her role will be.
What has been reported about William and Catherine’s approach?
Royal biographer Robert Hardman told PEOPLE that the late Queen Elizabeth understood the difficulty of being second in a hierarchy. “The late Queen [Elizabeth] was always very conscious of that extraordinary and challenging role of the No. 2,” he said. Hardman added: “That’s why she had a particular soft spot for [her sister] Margaret, for [her son] Andrew and Harry. She understood being second place in a strictly hierarchical family and institution has its challenges.”

Hardman also said, “Everyone is conscious of that,” and described William as seeing it as important to make royal life approachable for his children. Separately, an unnamed source told PEOPLE that Charlotte is being raised to “strike a balance between private life and duty.” That phrase is the source’s characterization; it is not a direct public statement by William or Catherine.
Together, those comments support a report about awareness of the pressures attached to royal roles. They do not establish a specific plan to shield Charlotte from Harry’s experiences, and Harry’s account should not be treated as a template for her future.

Could Charlotte become Princess Royal?
PEOPLE reported that Charlotte could potentially be offered the title of Princess Royal. It is bestowed by the monarch, and Charlotte could decline it. The report presents this as a possibility, not a confirmed decision or prediction.
The story also says the 2013 changes to succession rules preserved Charlotte’s place ahead of her younger brother Louis. That point concerns her formal position; it does not determine her future duties or personal choices.
