No—DVDs are declining, but the available evidence does not show that they are about to disappear. The latest U.S. industry figures still record spending on physical discs, but combine DVD with Blu-ray and 4K UHD. They cannot tell us how DVD sales alone are changing or when production might end. For viewers, the practical takeaway is that discs are becoming a smaller part of home entertainment, not that they have vanished.
What the numbers say about DVDs
The clearest recent evidence describes the U.S. physical-disc market as a whole—not DVD by itself. The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) reported that combined consumer spending on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD fell 23.4% in 2024, to $959.59 million from $1.25 billion in 2023. Its 2024 figures were labeled preliminary and cover sell-through transactions.
DEG’s preliminary year-end report for 2025 says spending on all physical formats declined by less than 10% for the year. That is a slower decline than in 2024, but it is not evidence of a reversal, and it does not reveal DVD-only sales. In the same report, U.S. spending on 4K UHD rose 12% in 2025. That distinct premium format helped support the broader disc category; it should not be read as a DVD comeback. See the DEG 2025 year-end report and its 2024 year-end report.
The longer arc is also clear. The Federal Communications Commission, citing historical data from S&P Global, reported that U.S. retail spending on physical video purchases and rentals fell from $11.8 billion in 2012 to $1.5 billion in 2023. This covers physical video broadly, not DVD alone. The FCC also documented the end of Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service in 2023 and Best Buy’s phaseout of DVD and Blu-ray sales in 2024. Those changes show that major distribution channels have contracted; they do not mean every retailer or studio has stopped selling discs. Read the FCC Communications Marketplace Report.

Why DVDs are losing ground
The strongest explanation in the available market reporting is a shift in consumer spending and distribution toward streaming. DEG says subscription streaming accounted for more than 92% of U.S. home-entertainment consumer spending in 2025, totaling $57.5 billion, using Omdia streaming estimates. That is a share of spending—not a count of viewers, subscriptions, or titles—and it helps explain why physical media now occupies a much smaller place in the market.
Streaming’s rise does not explain every change in disc spending. The reports also note that theatrical release schedules and shifts in premium-format sales can affect year-to-year totals. These market figures show what changed, not a controlled study of why individual households stopped buying DVDs. DEG’s 2025 report provides the latest annual figures; its mid-year 2025 report found that combined U.S. DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD sales were down 12% in the first half of the year, while 4K UHD Blu-ray grew almost 9%.

Are DVDs still being made?
The cited U.S. market reports do not establish a universal end to DVD production, nor do they provide a worldwide DVD-only sales series or a date when manufacturers will stop making discs. A decline in spending and the loss of prominent retail or rental channels are not proof that all production has ended. The most accurate answer is that DVD is in long-term decline, while a final shutdown date is not established by these sources.
DVDs and streaming serve different needs
Neither format is automatically the better choice. The right one depends on how you watch, whether you value a physical collection, and what playback options you have.

There is no universal cost winner without comparing a particular disc, current subscription price, and viewing frequency. Likewise, the market figures above do not establish a picture- or sound-quality winner between DVD and streaming.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for documentary viewers
If you rely on a particular documentary, a disc can be a useful way to keep that title in your collection instead of relying on a streaming catalog that may vary over time or by region. Before buying, confirm that the edition contains the version or extras you want and that you have compatible playback equipment. If convenience matters more, search current streaming catalogs for the specific title rather than assuming it is available on a particular service.
