Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures began as an Archie Comics series modeled on the animated show, then grew into its own continuity. It started with a three-issue miniseries in 1988; an ongoing series followed in 1989 and ran for 72 issues, alongside specials and miniseries, ending in 1995. For new readers, the key distinction is that the comic’s cartoon-friendly starting point gives way to original stories and themes—not a straightforward adaptation of the show.
How the Archie series began
Archie first published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures as a three-issue miniseries in 1988. Its approach was styled after the animated television series. The miniseries’ popularity led to a separate ongoing series, which began in 1989. Penguin Random House describes the Archie publication history as 72 issues of the ongoing series, plus specials and miniseries, ending in 1995. The Grand Comics Database likewise distinguishes the original three-issue miniseries from the restarted ongoing series.
That distinction matters when a listing or conversation refers loosely to “the 72-issue run”: the miniseries is not the first three issues of an ongoing title that simply continued uninterrupted. It is a separate starting point, followed by a new series.
How it became its own continuity
The early cartoon-inspired style is a useful entry point, but it does not describe the whole run. Beginning with a revamp around issue #5, writer Stephen Murphy—who wrote much of his work as Dean Clarrain—and artist Ryan Brown shifted the comic toward original arcs that diverged from the television series. Penguin Random House says the title “immediately diverged from the cartoon series into unique new story arcs”; that is the publisher’s description of the shift.

#1 Best Overall
The stories bring in new human, mutant, alien, and anthropomorphic characters. Murphy is credited by the publisher with co-creating characters including Jagwar, Nova Posse, Snake-Eyes, and Sarnath. Recurring characters also formed the Mighty Mutanimals, a team that received its own stories.
The themes and tone
The publisher highlights social, environmental, and animal-rights themes in the run, and characterizes its stories as deeper and more serious than the cartoon. That comparison is the publisher’s assessment, rather than an objective ranking. The practical point for readers is that the Archie comic develops interests and storylines of its own; it should not be treated as a retelling of the animated series.

What to expect as a new reader
- For a cartoon-adjacent start: the original miniseries provides the series’ initial animated-show-style approach.
- For the Archie comic’s distinct identity: follow the ongoing series through the revamp around issue #5, when original arcs and the run’s broader themes become prominent.
- For a collected reading path: begin with Vol. 1, then continue with Vol. 2 for the later issues and selected related stories.
The Archie title is one particular TMNT continuity. The available publication descriptions establish its movement from cartoon-inspired beginnings to original stories, but they do not provide a basis for a detailed issue-by-issue comparison with every other publisher’s version.
