Lead writer Amanda Overton said the writers planned from the start to make them canon—and built their path together around conflict, obstacles and mutual respect. It is a hard-won romantic payoff, not a story detached from the series’ larger conflicts over family, class and power.
Are Vi and Caitlyn canon in Arcane Season 2?
They are. Overton told Gizmodo that the writers set out to make the relationship explicit, rather than leave it at the level of fan interpretation: “They’ve been hinted at in the game, but they’ve never been made canon. So we want our show to make them canon.”

That intention shaped the story from its beginning. Overton said the writers knew the pair were “endgame,” but wanted the characters to earn that outcome. “That needs to be based on mutual respect,” she said. CaitVi—the fandom shorthand for Caitlyn and Vi—therefore has a planned destination, but its emotional weight comes from the difficult road there.
What happens to Caitlyn and Vi in Season 2?
The season puts their relationship under strain amid the fallout from Jinx’s attack on Piltover’s council and the escalating conflict between Piltover and Zaun. Vi and Caitlyn come from sharply different worlds: Caitlyn has privilege and chooses to fight, while Vi has spent her life having to fight for what she needs. Overton described those differences as part of the relationship’s construction, not an obstacle the show simply waves away.

After conflict and separation, the season gives them an intimate reconciliation. Overton has described Caitlyn’s reassurance in that vulnerable moment as telling Vi what she believes Vi needs to hear. The scene offers a meaningful resolution between them without turning the larger story into a frictionless happily-ever-after.
Why the romance matters beyond the couple
Making Vi and Caitlyn’s relationship explicit matters to viewers looking for queer romance that is part of the story rather than an ambiguous tease. But Arcane places that romance inside a broader account of violence, inequality and fractured family bonds. Vi’s relationship with Caitlyn does not erase her estrangement from Jinx or settle what their shared past can still become.

That question remains central through the ending. Co-creator and showrunner Christian Linke said the writers kept asking whether Vi and Jinx “can they be sisters again,” and that “that’s the question until the very end.” Overton described Jinx’s closing movement as a reclaiming of agency. The Caitlyn–Vi romance is one strand of a conclusion that also has to reckon with the sisters’ choices and the consequences of the conflict around them. How the League of Legends adaptation shaped the story
Arcane is based on Riot Games’ League of Legends, but the series makes its own television storytelling choices. Overton said Riot supported the team in making the best show they could while drawing on the game’s lore. The relationship’s canon status in the series is thus a decision of the television adaptation, rather than a claim that every detail of the show is identical to the game.
Netflix identifies the series as a collaboration involving co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee, Fortiche Production and Riot Games. Its Season 2 production feature covers the making of the season and the collaboration behind it.

Yes. Netflix describes Season 2 as the final chapter, and Linke said, “We had a very specific ending in mind, which means the story of ARCANE wraps up with this second season.” Both seasons are listed as streaming on Netflix in the platform’s Season 2 guide; availability can vary by territory and over time.
