Aragorn II Elessar is the son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, and his paternal line descends from Isildur and Elendil. He marries Arwen, daughter of Elrond and Celebrían; their named son is Eldarion. The tree below follows the relationships established in Tolkien’s published account and the cited lineage, marking where generations are omitted rather than suggesting every ancestor is named.

Gilraen is also connected to the northern line: she is the daughter of Dírhael and Ivorwen, and Dírhael is described as a descendant of Aranarth. The cited account does not give Gilraen’s complete ancestry, so this connection should not be mistaken for a fully traced second branch.
Who are Aragorn’s parents?
Arathorn II and Gilraen are Aragorn’s parents. Arador is his paternal grandfather. The account in Appendix A, “Here Follows a Part of the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen,” says Arathorn sought Gilraen’s hand and identifies Gilraen as Dírhael’s daughter. Ivorwen urges Dírhael to allow the marriage: “If these two wed now, hope may be born for our people; but if they delay, it will not come while this age lasts.”

Aragorn was called Estel, meaning “Hope,” while his name and lineage were kept secret. At age twenty, Elrond revealed his identity and gave him the heirlooms of his house. Those details concern his upbringing and heritage; Elrond was his foster-father, not his biological father.
Is Aragorn descended from Isildur?
Yes. Aragorn’s direct paternal ancestry runs from Elendil through Isildur and Isildur’s youngest son Valandil. Valandil survived the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, and his descendants included the Kings of Arnor. After the northern kingdom’s division, the line continued through the kings of Arthedain and then the Chieftains of the Dúnedain, leading to Aragorn. Tolkien’s succession names many ancestors, but not every intervening generation is included in the compact tree above.

Elendil’s other son, Anárion, established the ancestry of Gondor’s southern royal house. Aragorn’s direct paternal descent shown here is through Isildur, not Anárion. His eventual rule over the reunited kingdoms brings the northern and southern realms together politically; it does not change which branch his paternal ancestry follows.
How are Aragorn and Arwen related?
Aragorn marries Arwen, daughter of Elrond and Celebrían. They are also distantly related through the wider Númenórean and Elendil family lines. The cited family-tree reference notes multiple blood connections, so reducing their relationship to one precise cousin count would obscure the multiple paths of descent.

Who are Aragorn and Arwen’s children?
Their named son is Eldarion. The abbreviated family tree also records several daughters but does not name them. The sources represented here therefore support naming Eldarion and noting the daughters, not supplying names or further details for them.

This is a complete account of the relationships traceable from the published narrative and lineage summarized here—not an exhaustive diagram of every collateral branch or every unnamed ancestor. Tolkien’s Appendix A provides a narrative and succession, rather than one all-inclusive family chart. Read Appendix A in The Lord of the Rings for the primary account; a diagram should distinguish direct descent from marriage and collateral connections.
