Is the series based on a book?
Yes. The series is based on Tom Wolfe’s 1998 novel A Man in Full. TIME described the novel as 742 pages and centered on an Atlanta real estate mogul. The TV version updates the setting to the present day and revises material, so it is better approached as an adaptation than as a scene-for-scene retelling.
The two versions offer different experiences: Wolfe’s is a long-form social novel, while the Netflix version tells the story through a six-episode ensemble drama. Viewers curious about the source can read the novel as companion material, rather than assuming every plot detail carries over unchanged.

How was A Man in Full received?
Critical response was mixed. In a review published May 2, 2024, TIME TV critic Judy Berman argued that the six episodes felt superficial and disjointed, linking that reaction to the adaptation’s compressed context and character development. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 50% Tomatometer based on 40 critic reviews and a 42% Popcornmeter based on 100+ ratings on the page accessed for this article. Those figures are changing aggregates, not fixed measures of quality. The site’s critics consensus called the series “disappointingly half-baked in its exploration of masculinity”; that phrase is Rotten Tomatoes’ characterization.
Rank #4
Where can you watch it?
A Man in Full is listed in Netflix’s catalog as a limited series. The Netflix page accessed for this article displayed a 16+ rating, but age ratings are regional and should not be treated as universal.
