April May 99 is a Marathi-language coming-of-age film about the way a summer holiday can change when an unexpected person enters a close-knit friendship. Set in 1999 Shrivardhan, Rohan Mapuskar’s directorial debut pairs the boys’ comic resistance to change with the quiet pull of nostalgia, place and growing up.
What is April May 99 about?
The story begins in the summer of 1999 in Shrivardhan, a coastal town in Maharashtra. Krishna, Prasad and Siddhesh expect their school break to follow a familiar rhythm. But Prasad’s father wants to send him to Mumbai to improve his English, a plan that makes the boys’ friendship feel newly uncertain.
Then Jaie, the niece of a neighbour, arrives for a vacation. She brings a camera, curiosity about the fishing town and fluent English. Her arrival unsettles the boys’ expectations and gives their summer a new centre of gravity. The conflict is less about a grand adventure than the small upheavals that loom large when you are young: a friend might leave, someone new might change the group, and familiar routines may not last.
How the film makes nostalgia work
In her May 23, 2025 review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath describes the film as “an irresistibly charming account of the comforts of the old clashing with the shock of the new.” The appeal of that contrast lies in the way it connects the boys’ personal world to Shrivardhan itself. The town is not just a scenic backdrop: its coastal setting helps make this feel like a specific holiday, shaped by a place the children know and Jaie wants to explore.

The nostalgia is rooted in the scale of childhood experience. A summer break can seem expansive, while the events that define it are intimate: friends teasing one another, testing boundaries, or trying to make sense of a newcomer. The result, as Ramnath’s reading suggests, is less a plot driven by high stakes than a portrait of how ordinary moments can become vivid in memory.
Performances and adolescent growing pains
The central quartet is Sajiri Joshi as Jaie, Aaryan Menghji as Krishna, Shreyas Thorat as Prasad and Manthan Kanekar as Siddhesh. Ramnath praises the young performers and sees Jaie’s steadiness as a counterpoint to the boys’ agitated, comic energy. Their differences give the friendship its movement: Jaie brings an outsider’s perspective, while the boys try to hold on to what they already know.

The film handles puberty and adolescent sexuality gently, according to the review. Ramnath also notes that the boys can seem younger than teenagers in their earnestness and behaviour. Their attempts at English, including the line “I am thank you,” turn insecurity into comedy without making the characters feel like punchlines. That balance suits a story about growing up in fits and starts rather than suddenly becoming adult.
Setting, music and the closing note
Ramnath highlights the scenery and soundtrack as part of the film’s nostalgic effect. Her review names Rohan-Rohan as the composers and mentions “Mann Jaie,” sung by Sonu Nigam. The review also draws attention to a closing sequence poised between adolescence and adulthood, a fitting endpoint for a summer in which the children’s familiar world has begun to shift.
