The company intended a metaphor for fitting many tools into one thin tablet; viewers instead saw a celebration of technology replacing the people and traditions behind creative work. Apple said the video “missed the mark” and scrapped its planned television placement, although reports at the time said the video remained online.
What Apple’s “Crush!” commercial showed
Released alongside the M4 iPad Pro on May 7, 2024, the approximately 60-second spot opened on a pile of objects associated with creative and cultural life. A large hydraulic press descended and flattened them. The mix included a piano and other instruments, a guitar, a trumpet, paint and art supplies, cameras, sculptural figures, books, record-playing or electronic equipment, and arcade or game-related objects. When the press lifted, an iPad Pro sat underneath.
The ad never literally showed people being crushed. Its controversy came from the symbolism: physical tools and artifacts that represent creative practice were presented as material to be obliterated before an Apple device appeared. MacRumors’ account of Apple’s response describes the commercial and the backlash that followed.
What Apple was trying to say
The product message was convergence. Apple wanted viewers to read the press as compressing many separate capabilities into one exceptionally thin, portable iPad Pro. The M4 model was positioned as a powerful device for professional and creative workflows, so the objects functioned as shorthand for drawing, music, photography, video, reading and games.

That intention matters. The commercial was not an explicit claim that artists should disappear, nor did Apple say that an iPad literally replaces every camera, piano or paintbrush. It was a visual demonstration of consolidation. The failure was that the same image made replacement and erasure more legible than collaboration or expanded creative possibility.
Why the metaphor provoked such a strong reaction
Destruction overwhelmed empowerment
A hydraulic press carries an unmistakably violent visual vocabulary. Instead of showing creators gaining new abilities, the spot showed their familiar tools being destroyed. The sequence supplied no human hands, no artist, and no moment in which analog practice and digital work cooperated. The iPad appeared only after everything else had been flattened.
Creative objects carry identity and labor
A guitar, camera or paintbrush is not merely hardware. For many practitioners it embodies years of technique, memory, community and paid work. Treating those objects as disposable inputs made the ad feel dismissive of the culture Apple has traditionally courted.

AI and automation changed the audience’s reading
The spot arrived during heightened anxiety about generative AI, automation and the possibility of creative jobs being displaced or creative work being commodified. The commercial was not presented as an AI advertisement, but its image of a technology company compressing human-made culture into a product landed inside that debate. Axios connected the reaction to those existing concerns among creative professionals.

Apple’s own brand history raised the stakes
Apple’s advertising and product culture have long associated the company with designers, musicians, filmmakers and photographers. That history made “Crush!” look, to critics, like a reversal of Apple’s usual promise: the brand that once helped people express themselves now seemed to celebrate the destruction of the things through which they express themselves.
Who criticized the ad?
The response included prominent creative professionals, technology figures and ordinary social-media users. Actor Hugh Grant called the imagery the “destruction of the human experience.” Filmmaker Reed Morano, director of The Handmaid’s Tale, told Apple to “read the room.” Actor and filmmaker Justine Bateman criticized the spot as crushing the arts, while Basecamp chief technology officer David Heinemeier Hansson said it captured what many people disliked about digitization. These comments demonstrate prominent backlash; they are not a survey proving that every artist or Apple customer agreed.

Some viewers read the commercial more literally as a demonstration of technological consolidation, or as a reference to the popular genre of hydraulic-press videos. The criticism was loud and widespread in creative and technology communities, but it was not demonstrably unanimous.
Apple’s apology and the television decision
On May 9, 2024, Apple marketing communications vice president Tor Myhren provided a statement to Ad Age, later reported by outlets including MacRumors and The Verge. Myhren said creativity was “in our DNA at Apple,” that the company intended to empower creatives, and that it had “missed the mark” with the video. He apologized.

Reports published May 9–10 said Apple abandoned plans to run “Crush!” on television. The distinction is important: at the time, the video was still reported as available online, including through Apple’s YouTube presence. Those reports do not establish that every copy was permanently removed worldwide, and the ad’s current online status should not be inferred from the 2024 television decision. The Washington Post reported on the apology and placement decision.

Commentators compared “Crush!” with Apple’s famous 1984 commercial, which portrayed an individual breaking through an oppressive system of conformity. The comparison is an interpretation, not an official Apple description, but it explains the brand-history irony. In “1984,” destruction represented liberation from uniformity. In “Crush!,” a machine flattened a collection of human-made objects into one Apple product, making plurality look like waste.
Marketing Dive documented this “anti-1984” framing as part of the reaction. The two commercials use force differently: one directs it against a controlling order, while the other directs it at the material symbols of creative life.

What the controversy actually demonstrates
Intent and effect can diverge
Apple’s intended proposition—many tools in one device—was easy to understand. The emotional effect was the opposite: many viewers saw many tools being erased so one device could take their place. That gap, rather than a technical dispute about what an iPad can do, explains the apology.
Capability is not the same as cultural value
A tablet can be genuinely useful for illustration, music, photography, video editing or writing without making the instruments and practices it complements obsolete. A product demonstration that treats those practices as trash communicates a value judgment even when the company did not intend one.
The ad does not prove Apple wants to eliminate artists
The commercial supports a criticism of Apple’s messaging, not a definitive claim about Apple’s corporate beliefs, labor policies or attitude toward generative AI. It also does not prove that an iPad can replace every specialized creative tool. The strongest conclusion is narrower: Apple chose a metaphor that made technological replacement look triumphant at a moment when many creative workers were already worried about being displaced.
Timeline of the “Crush!” controversy
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 7, 2024 | Apple unveiled the M4 iPad Pro and released the “Crush!” commercial. |
| May 8–9, 2024 | Criticism spread among actors, directors, designers, technologists and other viewers. |
| May 9, 2024 | Tor Myhren issued Apple’s apology through a statement provided to Ad Age. |
| May 9–10, 2024 | Reports said Apple scrapped the planned television campaign while the video remained available online at the time. |
Coverage from the Associated Press and other outlets placed the dispute in that sequence. It remains a 2024 advertising controversy, not a new 2026 product announcement.
The lasting lesson for technology marketing
Brands that sell tools to creators cannot assume that technical compression is automatically a positive story. When the objects being “consolidated” are tied to identity, tradition and livelihoods, a destruction metaphor can turn efficiency into contempt. “Crush!” became a case study in how a technically clear product message can fail culturally: the ad showed what the iPad might contain, but not how creators themselves would remain visible and valued.
