Apple TV used 3,000 drones above Los Angeles to promote season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. On February 20, 2026, Guinness World Records certified the 139.5-meter (457-foot 8.126-inch) formation as the tallest aerial display of a fictional character formed by multirotors/drones. The distinction matters: this was not a blanket record for the biggest or tallest drone show in every category.
What audiences saw over Hollywood
The approximately 12-minute activation took place above or near Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. The drone fleet assembled into giant Monsterverse imagery, including Godzilla, King Kong and Titan X, before moving through Monarch branding and the Apple TV logo. Guinness described a production footprint of roughly 1,000 by 1,000 feet and said the display could be seen from miles away.
The spectacle was staged as part of Apple TV’s season-two promotional campaign and premiere activity. The new season was scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, one week after the record attempt. Cast members attended the event, which combined synchronized lights, music and cinematic formations.
Guinness’s event report documents the show’s characters, setting and promotional timing.

Which kaiju formed the record-setting figure?
Guinness’s record page identifies Godzilla, King Kong and Titan X among the figures created during the show. A Guinness social post specifically describes the record-setting formation as King Kong, while the accompanying article presents the height achievement as the culmination of the wider Monsterverse sequence. The safest description is therefore a 139.5-meter fictional-character display within a show featuring those three figures, rather than assigning the entire measurement exclusively to Godzilla or Kong without qualification.

The formation should also be called giant or kaiju-sized—not “life-size.” The verified number is the drone image’s height, not a claim that it matched a creature’s canonical physical dimensions.
How thousands of drones held the image together
Positioning and choreography
Guinness says the aircraft used RTK GPS precision positioning. That technology lets each drone maintain a highly accurate location while a control system coordinates thousands of synchronized flight paths. LED-equipped aircraft then act as individual pixels, allowing the swarm to draw silhouettes, animate transitions and change colors in the sky.

Production roles
- Apple TV commissioned the activation as a Monarch: Legacy of Monsters promotion.
- Heads in the Sky is credited by Guinness as supporting the record attempt.
- Verge Aero says its drone-show technology powered the production and describes the 3,000-drone deployment on its company account.
Public accounts do not establish the exact aircraft model, battery specification, communications protocol, operator count, launch and recovery schedule, or airspace approvals. They also do not publish a detailed measurement method for the 139.5-meter figure beyond Guinness’s certification.
Why “tallest drone show ever” is too broad
“Tallest drone show” is useful promotional shorthand, but it omits the formal limitation: Guinness measured the height of a fictional character formed by drones. The achievement is not automatically a record for the number of aircraft, the largest aerial image, the longest animation, the biggest flying LED screen or the largest promotional show.

Guinness maintains separate categories for those accomplishments. For example, its largest flying LED screen category concerns a different measurement, while a separate listing covers the longest animation performed by unmanned aerial vehicles. The existence of those categories is why the precise record title matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Guinness verified it
Guinness says an adjudicator was present at the event and that an independent aerial-display expert reviewed the show. The record was awarded for the February 20 performance. Guinness also cautions that records can change and that new achievements may not appear in its database immediately, so this article describes what Apple TV achieved on that date rather than claiming it remains the current holder indefinitely.

A streaming campaign turned into a public spectacle
The activation extended the Monsterverse from a screen property into a physical landmark visible across Los Angeles. A synchronized swarm offered dramatic footage for spectators and social platforms, while the Guinness certification supplied a news hook beyond a conventional trailer or red-carpet premiere. That is an example of “eventized” streaming promotion: a live stunt designed to function as entertainment and shareable content in its own right.
No public figures in the cited accounts establish the event’s audience size, reach, conversion rate or return on marketing spend. What is documented is the unusual combination of a season launch, a city-scale drone performance and a narrowly defined world-record attempt.
