There is no general free, unlimited Apple Music tier. You can download the app and use selected features without paying, but full on-demand access to Apple’s subscription catalog requires a paid plan.
There is no general free, unlimited Apple Music tier. The Apple Music app is free to download, and an Apple Account without a subscription can still access selected live radio stations, Apple Music TV, music you already own, and some limited previews. But the main Apple Music catalog—on-demand playback, catalog downloads, Sync Library, and most subscriber features—requires a paid plan.
That distinction matters because “free app” in the App Store does not mean “free access to more than 100 million songs.” Apple Music is a free app with selected no-subscription features plus a paid streaming service. Availability, features, prices, and promotions can vary by country, plan, device, and software version. The prices below are the current U.S. prices identified for this article and can change.
What you can do with a free Apple Account
You can install Apple Music, sign in with an Apple Account, and use several features without paying for an Apple Music subscription. The free experience is useful, but it is not an ad-supported version of the full catalog.

Listen to selected live radio and Apple Music TV
Apple allows people who are signed in but not subscribed to stream its live radio stations and Apple Music TV. These are programmed, broadcast-style experiences: you listen to what is being aired rather than freely choosing every song in Apple’s catalog on demand.
In other words, free radio is not the same as unlimited free streaming. A non-subscriber should not expect to search for any catalog song, start it whenever they want, skip without restriction, or build a complete on-demand streaming library.
Play music you already own
A subscription is separate from music that you purchased or otherwise own. Music bought through Apple or obtained as personal files can remain available without an Apple Music subscription, subject to the limitations that apply to the original purchase or file.
This is one of the most important differences between access and ownership:
- Apple Music catalog tracks: licensed for listening while your subscription is active.
- Purchased music: governed by the purchase and Apple’s content-availability rules.
- Personal music files: available through the device or computer where you keep them, and through manual syncing when supported.
Manually sync local music
Sync Library requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. Without either service, you can still manually synchronize music from a computer to compatible devices. This is practical if your collection consists of ripped CDs, purchased downloads, or other local audio files.
Manual syncing is not the same as Sync Library. It does not provide Apple’s cloud-based, continuously updated catalog library across all your devices.
Hear limited previews in some contexts
Previews may appear in limited discovery situations. For example, people who use Shazam on Android may hear song previews. Apple describes full-song listening in Apple Music on Apple devices as a subscriber benefit. Previews are therefore a discovery feature, not a free replacement for an Apple Music plan.
What a paid Apple Music subscription adds
A paid plan unlocks the core service: on-demand access to Apple’s subscription catalog, ad-free listening, catalog-based libraries and playlists, offline downloads, personalization, and cross-device syncing.

On-demand access to the catalog
Subscribers can search Apple’s catalog and play available songs, albums, and playlists when they choose. Apple advertises a catalog of more than 100 million songs, although the exact availability of recordings can differ by country, licensing agreement, device, and plan.
A subscription also adds the broader listening experience around that catalog, including curated playlists, personalized recommendations, lyrics, and ad-free playback. Radio is not exclusively paid—the free account can access selected live radio—but the subscription adds on-demand catalog listening and subscriber features around it.
Add music to your library and download it for offline listening
Subscribers can add songs, albums, and playlists from the Apple Music catalog to their library, then download that catalog music for offline listening. This is useful for flights, commutes, travel, or places with unreliable mobile service.
The key limitation is that an offline download is not a purchase. Downloaded Apple Music tracks remain playable as part of the subscription license; they do not become permanently owned files. If the subscription ends, the downloaded catalog tracks stop being available for playback.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Sync Library across devices
Sync Library lets a subscriber access their Apple Music library on other supported devices signed in with the same Apple Account. It is the convenient cloud-based option for keeping catalog additions, playlists, and library changes available across an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, Android device, web browser, or other supported platform.
Sync Library requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. When Apple Music ends, Sync Library turns off. Catalog-based music and playlists are no longer available, while music that was already on the device before the subscription remains available.
Get lossless audio and Dolby Atmos
Apple Music subscribers can access millions of songs in lossless formats, ranging from CD quality to Hi-Res Lossless where available. Hi-Res Lossless is not automatically the best choice for every listener: it uses more storage and data, and Apple’s highest resolutions require suitable external equipment such as a digital-to-analog converter.
Bluetooth headphones generally do not deliver a lossless signal over a Bluetooth connection in the ordinary listening setup. A wired connection and compatible hardware are typically needed to take advantage of higher-resolution lossless playback.

- Powerful Bass: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds have oversized 10mm drivers that deliver powerful sound with boosted bass so you can lose yourself in your favorite songs.
- Personalized Listening Experience: Use the soundcore app to customize the controls and choose from 22 EQ presets. With "Find My Earbuds", a lost earbud can emit noise to help you locate it.
- Long Playtime, Fast Charging: Get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge with a case that extends it to 30 hours. If P20i true wireless earbuds are low on power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you 2 hours of playtime.
- Portable On-the-Go Design: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds and the charging case are compact and lightweight with a lanyard attached. It's small enough to slip in your pocket, or clip on your bag or keys–so you never worry about space.
- AI-Enhanced Clear Calls: 2 built-in mics and an AI algorithm work together to pick up your voice so that you never have to shout over the phone.
Subscribers can also play available Dolby Atmos tracks. The intended spatial-audio experience requires compatible headphones, speakers, or other supported equipment; not every track or device supports the same features.
If you specifically want the highest-resolution playback, a USB digital-to-analog converter may be relevant. Most people do not need one for ordinary Apple Music listening, and buying a DAC does not provide access to the catalog without a subscription.
Use Apple Music Classical
In the United States, Apple Music Classical is included at no additional charge with Student, Individual, and Family Apple Music plans, as well as eligible Apple One plans. Its companion app provides classical-focused browsing and search while sharing the library relationship with Apple Music.
Current U.S. Apple Music plan comparison
| Plan | U.S. price | Best for | Important details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | $11.99/month | One person | Full Apple Music access; one simultaneous stream under Apple’s terms |
| Family | $19.99/month | A household using Family Sharing | Up to six people, with separate libraries, recommendations, and playlists |
| Student | $6.99/month | Verified college or university students | Individual-plan features plus Apple TV at no extra cost in the U.S. offer described by Apple |
| Apple One Individual | $19.95/month | One person already using several Apple services | Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Arcade, and 50GB of iCloud+ storage |
| Apple One Family | $27.95/month | Families using multiple Apple services | Shareable with up to five additional family members; includes 200GB of iCloud+ |
| Apple One Premier | $39.95/month | Families wanting the broadest Apple bundle | Adds Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and 2TB of iCloud+ to the bundle |
Apple’s U.S. plan page has contained an older, inconsistent Individual-plan price in an FAQ section. The current plan-card price identified for this comparison is $11.99 per month, not the older $10.99 figure. Confirm the price shown at checkout before subscribing.

How the paid plans differ
Individual: the simplest paid option
The Individual plan is the straightforward choice for one person who wants the full catalog, downloads, recommendations, lyrics, lossless and Dolby Atmos options where supported, Sync Library, and Apple Music Classical.
Apple’s terms limit an Individual membership to streaming on one device at a time. If several people in a home need to listen simultaneously, a Family plan is more appropriate.
Family: separate profiles through Family Sharing
The Family plan supports up to six people through Family Sharing. Each member uses their own Apple Account and keeps a separate music library, recommendations, and playlists. Family Sharing is not the same as giving everyone one shared login.
The organizer should invite family members through Apple’s Family Sharing system rather than share one Apple Account password. Apple’s definition of a family group and the availability of Family Sharing can vary by region, so check the current requirements before purchase.
Student: the lower-priced Individual experience
After student status is verified, the Student plan provides the same Apple Music features and benefits as the Individual plan. Apple’s U.S. listing currently shows $6.99 per month and includes Apple TV at no extra cost.

Student pricing is conditional, not a permanent discount. Apple or its verification partner may require continuing eligibility checks. If you no longer qualify, the subscription can move to a different price or require a plan change.
Apple One: worthwhile only when the bundle fits
Apple One is not a free Apple Music account. It bundles Apple Music with other Apple services. It can make sense when you already pay for Apple TV, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, Apple News+, or Apple Fitness+—especially when multiple members of a household use those services.
It is less compelling if Apple Music is the only service you want. Compare the bundle price with the individual services you would actually keep, rather than assuming a larger bundle is automatically cheaper.

What happens when Apple Music expires or is canceled?
When the subscription expires, you lose access to songs from the Apple Music catalog. Catalog-based playlists and playlists created with subscription tracks become unavailable, and Sync Library turns off.
Music that was already on the device before you subscribed remains available. Separately purchased music is treated according to the purchase rather than the Apple Music subscription. This is why “downloaded” must be used carefully: a downloaded Apple Music track is licensed for offline use during the subscription, not permanently purchased.
Before canceling: a practical checklist
- Identify playlists that contain Apple Music catalog tracks rather than music you own.
- Save or export any personal music files that are stored only on a subscription-managed device.
- Do not assume offline downloads will continue playing after the expiration date.
- Check whether Sync Library is currently combining local and catalog music, and keep a separate copy of important personal files.
- Confirm the exact expiration date and whether canceling stops renewal immediately or leaves access active until the paid period ends.
Do you need Apple hardware to use Apple Music?
No. Apple Music works across Apple devices and is also available on Android, Windows, web browsers, smart TVs, game consoles, Sonos, Amazon Echo, Google Nest, and other supported platforms. The exact features depend on the device, region, operating system, and app version.
Recommended Free Tools
AirPods are optional. Apple Music can play through compatible headphones, speakers, cars, and other audio equipment. Compatible AirPods models can add convenient automatic switching between supported Apple devices and support selected Spatial Audio features, but AirPods do not unlock the paid Apple Music catalog and are not required for basic listening.

| Your situation | Most suitable choice |
|---|---|
| You mainly want live radio, Apple Music TV, or music you already own. | Free Apple Account |
| You want full on-demand access and offline listening for yourself. | Individual |

| Several people need their own libraries and simultaneous listening. | Family through Family Sharing |
| Your household already pays for several included Apple services. | Apple One, after comparing the services you actually use |
Bottom line
Apple Music is not free in the usual “stream the entire catalog with ads” sense. The app and selected features—especially live radio, Apple Music TV, previews in limited contexts, and music you already own—can be used without a subscription. The paid service is what provides full on-demand catalog access, catalog downloads, Sync Library, personalized listening, ad-free playback, lossless audio, Dolby Atmos, and Apple Music Classical.
