Yes—Apple Music lets you manually change the order of songs in a playlist. On iPhone, iPad, and Android, open the playlist editor and drag a song using its reorder handle. On Mac and Windows, first switch the playlist to Playlist Order, then drag the tracks into position.
Playlist order versus Playing Next
Before changing anything, make sure you are editing the saved playlist rather than the temporary playback queue.
- Playlist order: The permanent sequence of songs saved in the playlist.
- Playing Next or Up Next: The temporary sequence Apple Music will play during the current session.
Reordering Playing Next does not necessarily change the playlist itself. Apple calls the queue Playing Next on iPhone, iPad, and Android, and Up Next on the web. See Apple’s Playing Next instructions for mobile devices.

- Open the Music app.
- Tap Library, then Playlists.
- Open the playlist you want to change.
- Tap the More button.
- Tap Edit.
- Press and hold the Reorder handle beside a song.
- Drag the song up or down to its new position.
- Tap Done if that button appears.
Use the small reorder control beside the track rather than dragging the entire song row. Dragging the row itself may play the song or open its menu. Apple documents this workflow for iPhone and iPad.

Rearrange a playlist on Mac
- Open the Music app and select the playlist.
- In the menu bar, choose View > Sort By > Playlist Order.
- Drag a song to the desired position.
The Playlist Order step is essential. If the playlist is sorted by title, artist, date added, or another field, dragging may be unavailable or may not produce the custom sequence you expect. See Apple’s Mac playlist instructions.
Rearrange a playlist on Windows
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Select the playlist in the sidebar.
- Open the Sort menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose View As > Playlist Order.
- Drag songs into the new sequence.
Apple’s Windows instructions also require the playlist to be displayed as Playlist Order before tracks can be manually moved.

Rearrange a playlist on Android
- Open Apple Music and tap Library.
- Open Playlists, then select the playlist.
- Tap More or Edit.
- Press and hold the reorder handle beside a song.
- Drag it to the new position.
- Save or leave the editor if the app asks you to confirm the change.
The exact surrounding labels can vary by Android device and app version. Apple’s general playlist guidance confirms the hold-and-drag reorder control on mobile devices.
Automatically sort the songs
If you do not need a hand-built sequence, Apple Music can sort a playlist using an available criterion. On iPhone or iPad:

- Open the playlist.
- Tap More.
- Tap Sort By.
- Choose an available option, such as title, artist, date added, or release date.
On Mac, use View > Sort By. On Windows, use the Sort menu and its available view or sort options. Apple’s available categories may vary by platform and app version.
Automatic sorting is not the same as manual rearranging. Sorting is useful for an alphabetical catalog or a playlist ordered by recent additions; manual order is better for a workout, road trip, event, or carefully sequenced listening experience.

Why can’t I drag songs?
- Desktop sorting is active: On Mac or Windows, switch to Playlist Order.
- You are not editing the playlist: On iPhone or iPad, use More > Edit.
- You are editing the queue: Playing Next or Up Next is temporary and separate from the saved playlist.
- The playlist is not yours: Apple Music, artist, publisher, or another user’s playlists may not provide the same editing controls.
- It is collaborative: Permissions determine whether you can add, remove, or reorder songs. Apple says the owner has the broadest control, while participants’ abilities depend on the collaboration settings and current software version. See Apple’s collaborative playlist guidance.
- The app is outdated: Update Apple Music and the device operating system, especially if collaboration features or editing controls are missing.
If playback still uses the old order
A correctly edited playlist may still play differently if Apple Music is using an existing queue. Try this sequence:
- Reopen the playlist and confirm the track positions changed.
- Make sure you edited the playlist, not Playing Next or Up Next.
- Start playback from the playlist’s first song rather than resuming an earlier session.
- Check that shuffle is off.
- Review or clear the current Playing Next queue.
- Check whether AutoPlay has added additional songs.
Apple documents queue controls separately from playlist editing, so a custom queue can take precedence over the playlist’s saved sequence.

Does rearranging delete songs?
No. Moving a song only changes its position in the playlist. Removing a song from a playlist also does not remove it from your music library or device storage, according to Apple’s iPhone, Mac, and Windows documentation.
Will the new order sync to other devices?
Usually, a playlist change can appear on other devices when Sync Library is enabled, the devices use the same Apple Account, and the playlist is part of the synced music library. Synchronization may take time, and an offline or outdated device can temporarily show the old order.
Users without an Apple Music subscription may need to sync music with a computer instead. Locally managed or computer-synced music can behave differently from an Apple Music cloud library. If the order does not appear elsewhere, verify the Apple Account and Sync Library settings, reconnect the device, update the app, and allow time for synchronization.
What about Apple Music in a browser?
Apple’s web documentation clearly explains how to reorder the temporary Up Next queue, but it does not establish an identical drag-and-drop workflow for changing the permanent order of a saved playlist on music.apple.com. For reliable playlist editing, use the Music app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, or Android where the documented controls are available.
