The booklet viewer remains available on supported iPhone, iPad, and Android releases, but only for selected albums. It is included with an eligible Apple Music subscription, not sold as a separate add-on.
What the September 2024 update added
The update reported on September 24, 2024 introduced three user-facing changes:
- Album booklets: digital versions of material associated with physical CD or vinyl releases.
- Recently Added: a Library section for finding music saved more recently.
- A dark icon: a launch-era icon option associated with iOS 18.
Contemporaneous coverage described the release as version 2.0, while a current App Store history in at least one storefront uses version 2.1 for the same release-note wording. The date and features are therefore more reliable identifiers than an unqualified version number. 9to5Mac reported the original release, and Apple’s documentation still describes the booklet function.
What an Apple Music Classical booklet contains
Apple describes booklets for thousands of albums as including material such as liner notes, translations and other album content. Depending on the recording, a digital booklet may also include composer or artist notes, composition information, lyrics, performer credits, photographs or editorial context.

#1 Best Overall
Contents differ by release. “Thousands” does not mean the entire catalogue, and a digital asset does not necessarily reproduce every page or insert from a particular physical edition. Apple must have the relevant material and rights, so two versions of related recordings may not offer the same booklet.
How to open a booklet
- Open Apple Music Classical on an iPhone, iPad or Android device.
- Search or browse to the album.
- Open the album page.
- Tap View Album Booklet when that control appears.
- If it is not shown as a button, open the album’s More or menu control and choose View Album Booklet.
The control appears only when Apple has a booklet for that album. Expect the associated notes, credits, translations, lyrics or images where supplied; Apple does not promise that every booklet contains all of those elements. The official steps are in Apple’s Apple Music Classical user guide.
Why Recently Added matters for classical libraries
Open the Library tab in Apple Music Classical and look for Recently Added. It is useful when a listener saves several recordings of the same work: a Beethoven symphony, for example, may appear in multiple versions distinguished by orchestra, conductor, soloist, ensemble or catalogue number.
The 2024 announcement confirms that the section was added. Its exact current placement and sorting behavior can change with app updates, so use the label visible in your installed version rather than relying on a fixed description of the interface.

Where booklets are available
Apple documents the viewer on iPhone, iPad and Android. That documentation does not establish an equivalent booklet reader in the regular Apple Music app, on Mac or Windows, on Apple TV, or on the web. Features and content can vary by album, country or region, language, subscription plan and device. See Apple’s support documentation for the documented availability caveats.
There is also a current requirement discrepancy. The U.S. App Store listing says iPhone and iPad require iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, while Apple’s general Apple Music page lists iOS/iPadOS 15.4 and Android 6 or later for the broader service. Treat the App Store requirement as the relevant check for that specific app listing and verify the version shown on your device before updating. U.S. App Store listing · Apple Music product page
Does Apple Music Classical cost extra?
No. Apple Music Classical is a companion app included with an eligible Apple Music subscription; it is not a separately billed classical service. Apple’s U.S. page currently lists these standard prices:
| Plan | U.S. standard price |
|---|---|
| Individual | $10.99 per month |
| Student | $6.99 per month |
| Family | $19.99 per month |
| Apple One Individual | $19.95 per month |
These are U.S. recurring prices, not a worldwide price list. Promotional offers can be temporary, personalized or device-dependent. Apple Music Classical is included with Apple Music Individual, Student, Family and qualifying Apple One plans. Check Apple’s current regional pricing and subscription requirements.

What the companion app adds beyond a normal track list
Apple Music Classical uses classical-specific metadata and discovery tools for composers, works, conductors and instruments. It also provides composer biographies, work descriptions, album notes, listening guides and curated recommendations, while the subscription includes the wider Apple Music catalogue. Booklets extend that context with material that a basic track list often omits.
- Read translations while following an opera or other vocal work.
- Check performers, recording credits and edition details.
- Read historical or compositional background before or during listening.
- Compare interpretations and releases with more information than titles alone.
- Give newcomers an entry point into unfamiliar works.
What the feature does not promise
- A booklet for every classical album or every physical release.
- A complete scan of every page, insert or edition-specific extra.
- A general-purpose PDF library.
- Permanent ownership, export or download of standalone booklet files.
- Continued access if the associated album leaves the streaming catalogue.
- Booklet viewing in every Apple Music Classical client or in the standard Apple Music app.
Apple’s documentation establishes selected-album availability, not printing, offline reading, exporting or ownership rights.
If “View Album Booklet” is missing
- Confirm that you are in Apple Music Classical, not only the regular Apple Music app.
- Check whether you opened a different release, such as a remaster, deluxe edition or alternate version.
- Make sure you are signed in to an eligible Apple Music subscription.
- Update or restart the app and confirm that your operating system meets the current store requirement.
- Consider catalogue, country or regional rights: Apple says booklets are available only for selected albums and that features vary by region and device.
If the booklet appears on one device but not another, the difference may be caused by platform, account, catalogue or regional availability rather than a fault with the recording.

Open the Classical app’s Library tab and look for the section by that name. If it is absent, update and restart the app, then verify that you are not looking only at the standard Apple Music Library. The section was part of the 2024 release, but Apple can change its placement or presentation in later versions.

How Apple Music Classical compares with specialist services
The right choice depends on whether the booklet is an extra benefit or the main reason to subscribe.
| Service | Best suited to | Relevant trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music with Apple Music Classical | Listeners wanting general music and classical discovery in one subscription, with Apple ecosystem integration and selected booklets. | Booklet coverage is not universal, and streaming access is not ownership of booklet files. |
| IDAGIO | Listeners seeking a classical-focused service. | Its support page lists a free tier, a $12.99 monthly tier and a €29.99 monthly or €199 annual tier; currency and offers depend on the subscription location. See IDAGIO’s official tier information. |
| Naxos ClassicsOnline | Listeners prioritizing specialist catalogue depth and downloadable files. | Naxos advertises more than 80,000 classical albums and downloads in FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and MP3, but no current public consumer price is established here. |
Apple is strongest for an existing subscriber who wants mainstream and classical listening together. IDAGIO is more focused on classical use, while Naxos ClassicsOnline emphasizes specialist catalogue breadth and downloads. Neither comparison changes the central limitation: a streaming booklet is not a guaranteed permanent physical or digital possession.
Bottom line
Apple Music Classical’s September 2024 update made liner notes, translations and related release material available for thousands of selected albums, alongside a more useful Recently Added library view. In 2026, the feature remains worth trying if you already subscribe to Apple Music and value context around recordings. It is less compelling if you require every booklet, a desktop-first reader, downloadable ownership or a purely classical catalogue.
