AirPlay lets you send supported video, photos, or audio from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a compatible TV, Apple TV 4K, speaker, or Mac—or show your device’s whole screen. You do not need an Apple TV 4K if your television already supports AirPlay. The key is choosing the right method: use an app’s AirPlay control to play media, and Screen Mirroring when you need to show the whole device display.
What AirPlay does—and what it doesn’t
AirPlay is Apple’s wireless media- and screen-sharing system. Your Apple device can act as the source or playback controller, while a compatible receiver plays the content or displays the screen. Receivers include Apple TV 4K, selected AirPlay-enabled smart TVs, compatible Macs, and some third-party streaming devices and audio equipment. Check the exact model and software: a TV being “smart” does not guarantee AirPlay support. Apple describes the supported uses and setup in its AirPlay guide.
AirPlay is not a streaming service or content subscription. It does not provide a library of movies and shows, and it does not unlock content you cannot otherwise play. A service may require an internet connection or subscription, and an app or content provider may restrict AirPlay or screen mirroring.

AirPlay is also different from Bluetooth, HDMI, and iPhone Mirroring. Bluetooth is commonly used for nearby audio accessories; HDMI is a wired video connection. iPhone Mirroring lets you interact with an iPhone from a Mac under specific system requirements—it is not the way to control an iPhone from a television.

Streaming versus screen mirroring

For a supported video app, use its AirPlay button when available. The receiver plays the media rather than continuously duplicating your phone’s display, which avoids showing notifications or screen changes. Mirroring is more flexible for showing things that do not have a dedicated playback control, but it cannot guarantee that every app or protected video will display.
Before you start
- Source: an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with compatible software.
- Receiver: Apple TV 4K, an AirPlay-enabled TV, a compatible Mac, or a supported third-party device.
- Network: normally, both devices should be on the same Wi-Fi network, with Wi-Fi enabled.
- Software: update the source and receiver where possible; menus and support can vary by model and version.
- For Apple TV 4K: connect it to the television by HDMI. Apple says HDMI cables are sold separately; see its setup guide.
Same Wi-Fi is not the same as internet access. Local discovery and communication usually happen over the local network, but a video service may need internet access to sign in or stream. Guest Wi-Fi, enterprise networks, router client isolation, captive portals, VPNs, or security settings can prevent devices from seeing one another even when both show a Wi-Fi connection. Apple notes that VPN configurations can interfere with local networking and Continuity features in its iPhone connectivity guidance.
AirPlay video from an iPhone or iPad
- Connect the Apple device and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a video app that supports AirPlay and start playback.
- Tap the AirPlay button, then choose the TV, Apple TV 4K, Mac, or other receiver.
- If prompted, enter the passcode shown on the television or receiver.
The control may be inside a playback-options or Share menu. To stop, tap the AirPlay control again and select the iPhone or iPad, or choose the app’s option to turn AirPlay off. Exact labels can vary across apps and software versions.
Send a photo or video from Photos
- Open Photos and select an image or video.
- Tap Share, then swipe up if needed to reveal more actions.
- Tap AirPlay and choose a receiver.

Mirror an iPhone or iPad screen
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Screen Mirroring.
- Select the receiver and enter its passcode if asked.
- Use the device normally; its display is shown on the receiver.
To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring. Mirroring is useful for a presentation or a website, but it may expose notifications and can be blocked by video apps. For a supported movie or show, the app’s AirPlay playback control is usually the better first choice.
Use AirPlay with a Mac
To send a Mac’s screen or supported media to a compatible TV or Apple TV 4K, open Control Center or the display controls, choose the AirPlay or screen-sharing option, and select the receiver. Depending on the Mac, software, and receiver, you may be able to mirror the display, share a window, or extend the desktop.
A supported Mac can also receive AirPlay from an iPhone, iPad, or another Mac. On the receiving Mac, open System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff and turn on AirPlay Receiver. Choose who can connect—such as the current user, people on the same network, or everyone—and set a password if appropriate. Availability depends on Mac hardware and software; Apple’s Mac AirPlay guidance has further details.

If your device connects or suggests a receiver unexpectedly, open Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity → Automatically AirPlay on iPhone or iPad. Choose Never to select a destination manually, Ask for suggestions before connecting, or Automatic to allow suggested or automatic connections to familiar receivers. Apple says automatic connections to Apple TV or HomePod work best when devices use the same Apple Account; that account is not a universal requirement for ordinary local AirPlay.

For a Mac receiver, restrict who can connect and consider using a password, especially on a shared network. On a shared household TV, setting automatic AirPlay to Ask or Never reduces accidental playback on the wrong screen.
Will AirPlay work at a hotel?
Some hotels provide AirPlay-enabled TV systems, but availability varies by hotel and region; Apple says hotel AirPlay is not available everywhere. Follow the room’s on-screen pairing instructions. Hotel Wi-Fi may use a captive portal, room-specific pairing, or device isolation, so the standard home-network steps may not apply.
If AirPlay does not work
The TV or receiver does not appear
- Confirm the receiver is on, nearby, and actually supports AirPlay; check its exact model rather than relying on the TV brand.
- Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, not one on guest Wi-Fi and the other on the main network.
- Check that AirPlay is enabled in the TV’s settings or that AirPlay Receiver is enabled on the Mac.
- Update and restart the source and receiver.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN and check router settings for guest or client isolation.
- If the TV or speaker is managed through Apple Home, review any access restrictions there.
Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting guide recommends checking power, proximity, software, shared Wi-Fi, receiver settings, and restarting devices.
It connects, then disconnects or buffers
Check Wi-Fi signal and congestion, router isolation, VPN or security software, and device software. A device changing access points or using a weak connection can interrupt playback. Restarting the receiver and router can help isolate a network issue. Apple also lists wireless interference and heavy Wi-Fi or Bluetooth use among possible contributors to related wireless-feature problems in its wireless connectivity guidance.

There is a picture but no sound
Check volume and mute on both the source and TV or receiver. Also check the TV or soundbar input and confirm audio is not being sent to headphones or another AirPlay speaker. App playback behavior can vary.
An app shows a black screen or refuses to play
The app may not support AirPlay, or the service may restrict screen capture or mirroring for protected content. Try the app’s own AirPlay button instead of mirroring; look for a native app on the TV, Apple TV, or streaming player; update the app; or use a permitted HDMI connection. AirPlay does not bypass content-protection rules.
The wrong receiver connects
Set Automatically AirPlay to Ask or Never as described above, then choose the intended screen manually.
The passcode prompt loops
Enter the code displayed by the receiver on the source device. If it has expired, request a new one; stop any existing session and try again. If the prompt still loops, restart the receiver and check its AirPlay security settings.

Do you need an Apple TV 4K?
No, not if your TV already supports AirPlay. Use the built-in feature first if it works reliably and you are satisfied with the TV’s own apps and interface. Verify AirPlay support for the specific model and firmware using the manufacturer’s documentation or Apple’s accessory compatibility information.
Apple TV 4K makes more sense if the television lacks AirPlay, its built-in software is slow or poorly supported, or you want a dedicated tvOS interface and deeper Apple ecosystem integration. Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos support for the current device, but the result depends on the app, source content, TV, HDMI chain, and audio equipment; AirPlay does not make every video 4K HDR. Check current local pricing before buying: prices vary by country and change over time. The device does not include subscriptions to third-party services, and Apple lists HDMI and USB-C cables separately on its Apple TV 4K store page.
A compatible Roku player is another option if you want a broader streaming interface and AirPlay at a lower cost than Apple TV 4K. Support is model- and software-specific: verify the exact player and its current Roku software against Roku’s AirPlay compatibility page. Do not assume every Roku or smart TV supports AirPlay.
If wireless discovery is unreliable, the network is unavailable, latency matters, or an app blocks AirPlay, a wired HDMI connection is often the more dependable fallback. An iPhone or iPad may require a compatible USB-C- or Lightning-to-HDMI adapter, depending on the device.
Which option should you try?

AirPlay is most straightforward when the receiver is compatible, both devices can see each other on the local network, and the app permits playback. Start with your TV’s built-in support; add a streaming device only if you need its interface or the TV cannot receive AirPlay.
