Anora is not a documentary, but Sean Baker’s 2024 Palme d’Or winner has the observational energy and social detail that often draw documentary audiences. It follows Anora “Ani” Mikheeva, a Brooklyn sex worker whose impulsive marriage to Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov, the son of a Russian oligarch, turns a fantasy of escape into a volatile confrontation with wealth, class, power, and personal agency.

What is Anora about?

Ani works as an erotic dancer in Brooklyn. Her life changes when she meets Ivan, a wealthy, immature young man who spends his family’s money freely and treats their relationship as an exciting private adventure. What begins as paid companionship develops into a whirlwind romance. The pair travel to Las Vegas and marry, apparently creating their own version of a Cinderella ending.

That fantasy lasts only until Ivan’s parents discover the marriage. They send their representatives to New York to secure an annulment, bringing Ani face to face with a family whose financial power dwarfs her own. The resulting pursuit moves between frantic comedy, uncomfortable confrontation, and increasingly bleak drama.

The story is fictional and is not based on a documented real-life marriage. Baker wrote, directed, and edited the film, shaping it as an original work rather than an adaptation or biography.

Cast and key characters

Actor Character Role in the story
Mikey Madison Anora “Ani” Mikheeva A Brooklyn sex worker who marries Ivan and fights to retain control over her life.
Mark Eydelshteyn Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov The reckless, sheltered son of a Russian oligarch.
Yura Borisov Igor A quiet member of the group sent to deal with Ivan’s marriage.
Karren Karagulian Toros A family representative involved in trying to resolve the crisis.
Vache Tovmasyan Garnik One of Toros’s associates.

The film is performed in English, Russian, and Armenian. That mixture is more than incidental: communication repeatedly breaks down, and characters often have to negotiate through partial understanding, translation, or assumption.

A fractured Cinderella story

Anora uses the structure of a Cinderella story but refuses to make wealth a simple rescue. Ivan’s money gives Ani access to luxury, travel, and temporary freedom, yet it also exposes the limits of her position. Once his family intervenes, the same money becomes a mechanism for control.

Ivan is not simply a Russian oligarch; he is the oligarch’s son. That distinction matters to the film’s power dynamics. He has inherited privilege without developing the maturity or responsibility needed to understand its consequences. Ani, meanwhile, is often treated by the people around him as a problem to be removed rather than as a person with a claim to dignity and choice.

Baker keeps Ani’s perspective at the center without turning her into a symbol detached from her humor, anger, pride, or contradictions. Her work is part of the character’s circumstances, not a shortcut to defining her entire identity. The film’s tension comes from watching her attempt to make decisions in a situation where nearly everyone else has more money, information, or institutional power.

Sean Baker’s style

Baker is known for films that place economically marginalized people at the center of vivid, often unruly stories. In Anora, he combines handheld immediacy, crowded spaces, extended pursuit sequences, and abrupt changes in tone. Scenes can feel comic one moment and painfully exposed the next.

The film’s long runtime—listed as 138 minutes by Cannes, 139 minutes by Criterion, and approximately 2 hours 19 minutes in U.S. box-office listings—allows its emotional shifts to develop gradually. The first section is fast, bright, and driven by Ani and Ivan’s excess. The later section becomes more repetitive and physically exhausting, reflecting Ani’s increasingly narrow options.

That tonal design is important. Anora is sometimes marketed or discussed as a romantic comedy, but it is not a conventional one. Its romance is unstable, its comedy often comes from humiliation or incompetence, and its apparent happy ending is deliberately threatened. The film is better understood as a comedy-drama with romance at its center and a sharp interest in class.

Why the film matters to documentary audiences

Although it is a scripted feature, Anora has a strong observational quality. Baker pays attention to workplaces, apartments, clubs, cars, streets, accents, money, and the practical labor required to move through a city. The film does not pause for explanatory speeches about inequality; it shows inequality through who can make a phone call, who can summon a lawyer, who can cross a border, and who is expected to wait.

Its social realism also depends on performance and behavior rather than exposition. Ani’s working life, Ivan’s wealthy isolation, and the family’s private network of representatives are revealed through routines and encounters. For viewers interested in documentary filmmaking, the film offers a useful example of how fiction can borrow the texture of nonfiction while still using carefully controlled structure, editing, and genre.

Release, awards, and reception

Anora premiered in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2024. Sean Baker won the Palme d’Or on May 25, making the film the festival’s top prizewinner. NEON released it theatrically in the United States on October 18, 2024.

At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, the film won five Oscars:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director for Sean Baker
  • Best Actress for Mikey Madison
  • Best Original Screenplay for Sean Baker
  • Best Film Editing for Sean Baker

It received six Oscar nominations in total. Yura Borisov was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but did not win, so descriptions claiming that Anora won six Oscars are incorrect. The film also won BAFTAs for Leading Actress and Casting in 2025.

Final assessment

Anora begins like a fast, glittering escape story and gradually reveals the cost of confusing access to wealth with genuine security. Its strongest achievement is the way it keeps Ani emotionally legible while surrounding her with people who see her as a transaction, an inconvenience, or a legal complication. Mikey Madison’s performance gives the film its volatility and vulnerability, while Baker’s editing turns the collision of comedy and anxiety into the film’s defining rhythm.

For documentary viewers, it is a particularly worthwhile fiction film: socially observant, grounded in material realities, and attentive to people whose lives are usually treated as background. It does not offer a simple lesson about sex work, romance, or rich families. Instead, it asks who gets to call an experience love, who gets to define a marriage, and who has the power to make an unwanted story disappear.

The Bottom Line
