Spoilers for the full film and its ending. After Ani and Ivan’s marriage is annulled, Igor returns her engagement ring outside her Brighton Beach home. Ani initiates sex with him, rejects his attempt to kiss her, then breaks down crying in his arms. The film never explains exactly what she wants or what happens next. Director Sean Baker has said he deliberately leaves Ani’s future open for viewers to imagine.

What did Sean Baker say the ending means?
In a KUNC/NPR interview published October 20, 2024, writer-director Sean Baker described the final moment as intimate and cathartic, but said it offers “no solid answer” about Ani’s future. “It’s really up to the audience at that point to sort of write the ending,” he said. Read the KUNC/NPR interview.
Baker also said Ani may not be in love with Ivan before their wedding, but sees potential in him. That context helps explain her attraction to the life Ivan represents; it does not resolve what she feels for Igor in the final scene.

How does Mikey Madison interpret Ani’s final scene?
Madison has described the ending as deliberately open to different readings. In ELLE, she said interpretations of what Ani wants or feels are “a reflection of, kind of, who you are.” Read Madison’s ELLE interview.
Madison recounted one man’s theory that Ani was trying to get pregnant to claim Ivan’s money. She called that perspective disgusting and said it revealed something about how he viewed Ani and women. That is Madison’s account of one person’s interpretation, not evidence of a wider audience consensus or a confirmed plot point.
What do sex-worker perspectives add?
A November 11, 2024 report by Creative Collaboration, republishing Mashable reporting, sought responses from people with lived experience of sex work. Kaytlin Bailey, host of The Oldest Profession Podcast and founder and executive director of Old Pros, praised the ending’s silence: “I love that he allows the viewer to fill in that space.” Bailey also contrasted Ani’s speech and self-advocacy throughout the film with the quiet of its final moment. Read the report.
Bailey’s comments offer one perspective, not a representative account of sex workers as a group. Madison said she prepared for her role by reading memoirs, visiting clubs, and talking with dancers and sex workers; that preparation, too, does not make the ending’s meaning definitive. What can viewers reasonably take from the final scene?
The ending supports several interpretations without confirming any one of them. Ani may be seeking intimacy, asserting control, or moving through a moment that mixes both. Her actions may signal a connection with Igor, repeat a familiar transactional dynamic, or remain difficult to separate from the distress of everything that has happened. Her tears can be read as grief, catharsis, or unresolved pain. The film leaves those readings in tension rather than supplying a verbal ruling.
That openness is central to the ending: Ani initiates sex but refuses a kiss; she fights Igor, then accepts his embrace. The sequence gives viewers actions and emotion, not a settled explanation of her motives or her next choice.
