Its political thriller turns a family’s fracture into a portrait of national upheaval—but, as Los Angeles Times critic Katie Walsh argues, the film leaves too much of that transformation indistinct to give its ideas the depth they promise.
What is Anniversary about?
The 2025 thriller follows Ellen and Paul Taylor as their family is unsettled by the return of Liz, Ellen’s former student. Liz begins dating the Taylors’ son Josh and is associated with a controversial movement called “The Change.” As the family’s relationships shift, the country enters a period of uncertainty.

The premise gives Komasa a way to connect private choices with public consequences. The Taylor home becomes the human-scale setting for a broader political allegory: what happens when an unsettling movement moves from the edges of family life into the institutions and routines of a country?
A strong cast gives the allegory a human center
Diane Lane plays Ellen and Kyle Chandler plays Paul, with Phoebe Dynevor as Liz and Dylan O’Brien as Josh. The ensemble also includes Zoey Deutch, Mckenna Grace, Madeline Brewer, and Daryl McCormack. That family structure offers the film several points of view on the same widening crisis, rather than limiting the story to a single political argument.

The cast is a major part of the film’s appeal, but star power cannot supply details the script leaves vague. The central dramatic question is whether the family’s conflicts feel specific and consequential enough to make the allegory resonate. Anniversary has a compelling framework; its political ideas do not always give that framework a sufficiently clear shape.
Where the political thriller loses depth
In her October 31, 2025, review for the Los Angeles Times, critic Katie Walsh identifies the film’s central weakness as a lack of political and ideological specificity. She writes that it is “a thought experiment more than anything else” and calls it “a hypothetical question as character study.” Those are Walsh’s assessments, but they capture the gap between the film’s ambitious premise and the detail it offers to support it.

Walsh describes a movement framed in the language of solidarity, a single-party system, and an eventual autocratic surveillance state. Her criticism is that the film does not get into the specifics: it does not clearly establish Liz’s political position or show enough of the mechanisms by which “The Change” gains power. The result can leave the political turn feeling like a foreboding concept rather than a fully developed chain of events.
The family’s reactions are part of that argument. Walsh notes that Ellen is suspicious of Liz, while Paul assumes good faith and avoids engaging with Liz’s book. Their difference suggests how warning signs can be dismissed or interpreted away. But when the wider transformation is not sharply defined, the family’s choices have less political texture to push against. Walsh reads the film as nihilistic, asking how such a transformation can happen without offering the specificity that might make the answer feel persuasive.

Who should watch it?
Anniversary is best suited to viewers drawn to political thrillers that use family drama to explore social instability, and to audiences interested in its ensemble cast. Its premise invites discussion about complicity, denial, and the slow normalization of political change. Viewers looking for a carefully explained ideology or a step-by-step account of how a movement captures power may find the film frustratingly indistinct.
