Anne Burrell’s career moved from culinary school and New York restaurant kitchens to nearly three decades of Food Network appearances, bestselling cookbooks and a signature role teaching home cooks. She married Stuart Claxton in 2021. Although the original topic mentions motherhood, published survivor information names Claxton’s son but does not establish whether Burrell had children or describe her relationship with her stepson.

Anne Burrell’s early life and culinary training

Anne Burrell was born in Cazenovia, New York, on September 21, 1969, according to the Television Academy. She grew up in upstate New York, where time in the kitchen with her mother helped spark an early interest in cooking. Before committing to a culinary career, she earned a degree in English and communications from Canisius College. (Food Network; Television Academy)

Burrell enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), graduating with the class of 1996. She later recalled, “I loved every minute of being a student at CIA,” and described the school as her “springboard.” (CIA)

From European kitchens to New York restaurants

After graduating, Burrell spent a year studying and working in Italy’s Umbria and Tuscany regions. Back in New York, she worked at the restaurants Felidia and Savoy, then went on to become executive chef at Lumi and Centro Vinoteca, according to the CIA. That path gave her experience in professional kitchens before television made her familiar to a much wider audience. (CIA)

Anne Burrell’s Food Network career

Burrell’s Food Network debut came as the star of Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which ran for nine seasons. She became especially well known as the host of Worst Cooks in America, where she coached people with little confidence or experience in the kitchen. The Associated Press reported that the series ran for 27 seasons with Burrell and that her last appearance was in 2024. (Food Network; Associated Press)

Competition shows and hosting

Her on-screen work included appearances on Iron Chef America, Chopped, Beat Bobby Flay and Food Network Star, as well as hosting Vegas Chef Prizefight. Burrell won Chopped All-Stars in 2015. The CIA says she donated $75,000 from that win to Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, in recognition of her nephew Luke, who lives with type 1 diabetes. (Food Network; CIA)

Burrell’s later television work included House of Knives. The AP noted her appearance on that Food Network series in spring 2025, as well as an April 2025 appearance on NBC’s Today. The Television Academy lists her date of passing as June 17, 2025. (Associated Press; Television Academy)

Teaching home cooks and writing cookbooks

Teaching was a central part of Burrell’s public identity. In 2020, speaking about teaching on ABC’s Good Morning America, she told the AP, “If people want to learn, I absolutely love to teach them,” adding that students needed to break bad habits and stop getting in their own way. She also put her approach simply: “Cooking is fun. It doesn’t have to be scary. It’s creating something nurturing.” (Associated Press)

Burrell’s books include Cook Like a Rock Star and Own Your Kitchen, listed by Penguin Random House and the CIA. The publisher’s author catalog confirms both titles. (Penguin Random House; CIA)

Anne Burrell’s husband and family

Burrell married Stuart Claxton in 2021, according to the AP. The AP’s report on her survivors named Claxton and his son, along with Burrell’s mother and two siblings. That information supports identifying Claxton as her husband and noting that he had a son; it does not establish that Burrell had biological or adopted children, or describe her relationship with Claxton’s son.

Planning a photo feature

A photo-led biography can follow Burrell’s story from her New York beginnings through restaurant work, television, teaching and books. Food Network’s profile links to photo features and cooking demonstrations, while the AP published captions for event photographs from 2013 and 2025. Those references do not grant permission to reuse images. Use only images cleared for publication, verify each event and date for captions, and do not infer family relationships from a photograph alone. (Food Network; Associated Press)
