Anna Wintour stepped back from the editor-in-chief role at Vogue’s US edition after 37 years, but she did not leave Vogue or Condé Nast. What changed—and what did not
In June 2025, Vogue and Condé Nast said Vogue US would seek a Head of Editorial Content to lead its daily operations across platforms. Wintour had led American Vogue as editor-in-chief since 1988. The announcement marked the end of her 37-year tenure in that US post, not a departure from the company or from Vogue’s global leadership.
Wintour retained her roles as Condé Nast Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director of Vogue. The new US position was titled Head of Editorial Content, rather than editor-in-chief. Its remit was to lead the US title’s daily work; Wintour continued to hold broader global and company-wide responsibilities. Who took over Vogue US?
On September 2, 2025, Condé Nast announced Chloe Malle as Vogue US Head of Editorial Content, effective immediately. The company said she would lead the title’s creative and editorial direction. Malle reports to Wintour, connecting the US edition’s daily leadership to Wintour’s continuing global Vogue role. Vogue’s announcement of Malle’s appointment confirms the new role and reporting line.

Speaking to Vogue staff after the change was announced, Wintour joked, “And it goes without saying,” she joked, “that I plan to remain Vogue’s tennis and theater editor in perpetuity,” according to The Associated Press. The line was humorous, but the reporting also described her as continuing in her senior roles at Condé Nast and Vogue. The Associated Press report published June 26, 2025 covered the announcement.
