Anna Samson says she is proud to play Detective Inspector Mackenzie Clarke in Return to Paradise, the Australian spin-off she describes as the first Death in Paradise series to put a woman in the lead-detective role. The six-part production takes the franchise to Australia, with filming in the Illawarra region on the New South Wales South Coast.
What Anna Samson said about the role
In a PerthNow interview published on 7 September 2024, Samson described the opportunity as daunting, given the franchise’s succession of male detective leads. She also said she was proud that the Australian production—and ABC—made the move to a female lead detective: “But also, I am very proud — proud that it’s Australian and that it’s our ABC that is the first to make the move into casting a female as the lead detective.”

That is Samson’s characterization of the franchise milestone in the interview, not an independently measured ranking. The interview presents the change in lead as a creative choice made by the Australian series.
Who Mackenzie Clarke is
Samson plays Detective Inspector Mackenzie Clarke, an Australian detective who returns to her home town of Dolphin Cove after working for the Metropolitan Police in London. The interview describes Mackenzie as quirky, funny and complex. Samson valued playing a woman who was not especially preoccupied with being liked.

How the spin-off fits the franchise
Return to Paradise is described in the interview as a six-part Australian spin-off of Death in Paradise. While the original series is set in the Caribbean, the spin-off shifts the setting to Australia and follows a detective returning home. Samson also connected the franchise’s appeal to the pleasure of following a case: “Audiences love solving puzzles, and they love watching maverick detectives solve puzzles.”
