Woman of the Hour uses a real 1978 Dating Game appearance as the basis for a story about danger, attention and the ways people may signal discomfort when speaking plainly feels unsafe. Anna Kendrick, making her feature directorial debut, says the title is deliberately ironic: its bachelorette is supposedly the center of the show, yet is also displayed and judged. The film’s account of women’s indirect communication is Kendrick’s interpretation, not a claim that all women communicate the same way.

Is Woman of the Hour based on a true story?

Yes, but it is a dramatization rather than a documentary reconstruction. The historical starting point is real: in 1978, serial killer Rodney Alcala appeared as a contestant on The Dating Game, with Cheryl Bradshaw as the bachelorette. Netflix’s synopsis calls the film’s protagonist Sheryl, while the real woman’s name is Cheryl. Netflix describes the movie as a story of an aspiring actor in 1970s Los Angeles whose path crosses Alcala’s on the show. Netflix Tudum and the Netflix Media Center provide the film’s premise.

Netflix Tudum reports that Alcala was ultimately convicted of seven murders in two states. That is a conviction count, not an estimate of how many people he may have killed; suspected victim totals should not be presented as adjudicated cases. The film draws on the danger surrounding the real episode, but its scenes and character arcs are shaped for a feature narrative.

What does “Woman of the Hour” mean?

Kendrick told Adrian Horton of The Guardian that “There’s something perverse and ironic about Woman of the Hour.” She explained: “This is supposedly Cheryl’s moment, but she’s an object of consumption and objectification.” The title names the person presented as the evening’s star, while the format also invites an audience to look at her, assess her and treat her presence as entertainment.

That tension gives the title more weight than a simple reference to a game-show role. Sheryl is made visible and celebrated, but visibility does not necessarily mean control. Kendrick’s reading is grounded in her account of the film’s intent, rather than a universal explanation of how every viewer or woman experiences the phrase.

What is the “secret language” Kendrick describes?

Kendrick told The Guardian, “There is a strange secret language between women.” She was describing situations in which someone may choose an indirect signal instead of telling a man outright that he is making her uncomfortable. As she put it: “There are certain things I wouldn’t risk saying to a man if we were alone, such as: ‘Hey, you’re making me uncomfortable.’” She added, “What is happening will be very clear to most women.”

In the film, a bar scene gives that idea a concrete form: Sheryl signals a waitress for an indirect way out. The exchange treats the signal as practical communication under pressure, not as a puzzle for the audience to solve. Kendrick’s remarks explain her perspective on the scene; the reviewed sources do not provide a social-science study or population statistic establishing how common any particular coded signal is.

How does the film differ from the historical episode?

The recognizable game-show encounter is real, but selected details were changed. In its fact-versus-fiction account, the Los Angeles Times reports that Alcala was Bachelor No. 1 in the real episode, while the film makes him Bachelor No. 3; the film also changes the prize. The movie’s recognition-and-warning subplot is dramatized and should not be treated as a verified event in the historical episode. The Los Angeles Times comparison discusses those changes.

Element Historical reporting Film
Contestant position Alcala was Bachelor No. 1, according to the Los Angeles Times. He is Bachelor No. 3, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Prize The prize differed from the film’s version; the Los Angeles Times reports a change. The prize is altered for the film, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Recognition-and-warning subplot The cited reporting does not establish the film’s subplot as a verified historical event. A dramatized part of the story, as described in the Los Angeles Times comparison.

These changes do not erase the historical premise, but they matter when distinguishing the movie’s dramatic construction from documented details. Its purpose is not to reproduce every beat of the broadcast as an evidentiary record.

How does Kendrick frame the film’s portrayal of women?

Kendrick has said she wanted to depict women with dignity and avoid filming victimization in a titillating way. That intention connects the film’s form to its subject: the story is built around vulnerability and threat, but it need not turn harm into spectacle to make those stakes legible.

Netflix Tudum also quotes Kendrick on Sheryl’s movement from people-pleasing toward self-assertion and on the uneasy balance between living authentically and assessing danger. Screenwriter Ian McDonald describes dating a stranger as a necessary vulnerability that carries risk. These are the filmmakers’ interpretations of the story, not scientific conclusions about dating or women’s behavior. Netflix Tudum’s interview and film feature includes their comments.
