Vinothraj’s Tamil film Kottukkaali (The Adamant Girl), through gesture, movement and deliberate stillness. In interviews, Ben has described how she prepared for the role and why she believes the Justice Hema Committee report underscores the need for a safer Malayalam film industry. These are connected by questions of voice and agency, but Meena’s story is not an allegory for the report.
Who is Meena in Kottukkaali?
The film follows Meena and a group of family members and villagers travelling to take her to a seer. They believe a supposed curse explains her relationship with a man from an oppressed caste. The journey unfolds within a group’s belief system and the pressure it places on Meena; the story should not be reduced to a harmless ritual. The Chennai International Film Festival’s film listing identifies P. S. Vinothraj as director and describes the family’s attempt to take Meena to a seer.

The film opened in cinemas on August 23, 2024, according to Scroll’s August 28, 2024 interview with Ben. That conversation focuses on how she approached a character whose choices are often expressed without speech.
How did Anna Ben prepare to play a silent character?
Learning the setting and building Meena
Ben said she was initially hesitant because Meena was rooted in Madurai, a place and culture she did not feel connected to. She arrived a few days before filming, spoke with local people, and heard stories about women’s strength. Director Vinothraj helped her imagine Meena as a bright, outspoken girl who decides not to speak once she is cornered.

That distinction matters: Meena’s silence is not simply an absence of personality. Ben’s account presents it as a choice made under pressure, while Vinothraj describes both the circumstances that silence her and the resolve that persists within it.
Making movement carry meaning
Without dialogue, Ben had fewer conventional tools for conveying a character, but she saw that limitation as an opening for detailed physical choices. She told Scroll, “When the dialogue is taken off, there are limited things you can work with, but that’s also the beauty of it because you become creative.” She described small actions—including touching her hair, pulling her dress and fidgeting with a ring—as intentional rather than incidental. “Every single thing Meena does is intentional, from the way she touches her hair or pulls her dress. Every movement has meaning.”
Ben also credited cinematographer B. Sakthivel’s framing with shaping how her movement appeared on screen. The performance, as she described it, was therefore not only a matter of acting through gesture: its meaning depended in part on how the camera observed those gestures.
What does Meena’s silence mean in the film?
Vinothraj has said that a girl in Meena’s situation may be left silent while others speak about her. At the same time, he sees her silence as an expression of a decision she has already made and of steadfast desire. He called it “a defiant, adamant kind of silence” in an interview with Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art.
Those ideas—silence as an imposed constraint and silence as chosen defiance—coexist. Meena has little control over the group’s journey or the story others tell about her, yet her refusal to speak can also signal that their pressure has not changed what she wants. The film’s title reinforces the tension. Vinothraj explained that in Southern Tamil Nadu, kottukkaali is a dismissive term for women, young and old, who say or do what they want. Its connection to “an adamant girl” turns an insult into a description of the quality the film places at its centre.
Vinothraj has said he wanted to follow a group and its belief system without demonizing or falsifying the people portrayed. He also said he avoided using music or excessive drama to force an emotional response. That approach places the audience close to the group’s ordinary behaviour while leaving room to notice the pressure bearing on Meena.

In the August 2024 Scroll interview, Ben said she felt pain that people in her industry had gone through the experiences associated with the report, while welcoming efforts to create a safer environment for women. She thanked the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) for its work and said, “The intention behind the report is for people in power to realise that we need a safer environment.” These are Ben’s comments about the report and the industry, not a summary of the report’s findings.
The interviews cited here do not provide a comprehensive account of the Justice Hema Committee report. Ben’s remarks are useful for understanding her response as an actor working in Malayalam cinema; they should not be treated as evidence of specific report findings.
How did Ben describe workplace safety in 2025?
In a Cinema Express interview published February 27, 2025, Ben said she would prefer a better work environment to maintaining a false image of the industry. She said people deserve a safe space where they can focus on their craft and that problems need to be addressed. As she put it, “everyone deserves a safe space where they can trust the people around them, focus on their craft, and not make things difficult for others.” She also clarified that she is not officially part of WCC.
Her comments make the connection to Meena’s story one of agency and the conditions that shape it—not a claim that the film depicts the Malayalam industry or directly represents the committee report. Ben’s performance explores what a person can communicate when others control the conversation; her workplace comments argue for an industry in which people can do their work without having to contend with unsafe conditions.
