AniTube was reported offline in early May 2016 after its creators sold the site to Japanese investors, who reportedly restricted access to Japan. Contemporary reports differ by a day on when the outage or Brazil restriction began, and they do not identify the buyers, sale terms, or a legal action behind the change.
What happened to AniTube in Brazil?
In a report published May 11, 2016, TecMundo said AniTube had been offline since May 6 and attributed the change to a sale by the site’s original creators to Japanese investors, followed by a restriction on access outside Japan. TecMundo / Minha Série’s report did not name the investors or disclose the transaction terms.
A separate May 2016 report from IntoxiAnime dates AniTube’s unavailability in Brazil to May 7. The difference may reflect the initial outage versus the geographic restriction; the available reporting supports describing the event as occurring in early May, not assigning one definitive date to both changes. IntoxiAnime’s report framed the question as “Anitube caiu?”—“Did AniTube go down?”
What did reports say about the sale and audience?
TecMundo reported that 93.5% of AniTube visits came from Japan and 4% from Brazil. Those figures are the outlet’s reported numbers; its article does not identify the analytics publisher or measurement period in the material available. They should not be treated as independently verified audience measurements.

AnimeNew also reported in 2016 that AniTube had been sold and might return as a legal streaming service. AnimeNew’s coverage does not establish that a legal relaunch occurred. The contemporaneous reports reviewed do not establish the buyer’s identity, price, transferred rights, or whether any formal sale terms were made public.
Did a legal action cause AniTube to go offline?
The cited 2016 coverage attributes the change to the reported sale and a restriction on access outside Japan. It does not establish that a court or regulator ordered AniTube blocked, or that enforcement pressure caused the sale. No site-specific legal finding is established by these reports.

Brazil’s regulatory context later changed: on May 15, 2025, ANCINE reported that it and ANATEL had signed a cooperation agreement addressing services that distribute audiovisual works without authorization under Law No. 14.815/2024. ANCINE’s announcement concerns that later framework; it does not explain AniTube’s 2016 sale or access restriction.

TecMundo named AniTube Brasil and BraniTube as successor projects associated with former members. At the time of publication, the report described them as early-stage. That 2016 account does not confirm either project’s present operation, current ownership, or the safety or legality of any similarly named site. The reporting is historical, so it is not a basis for visiting current AniTube-branded domains or mirrors.
