For a clear supernatural premise that quickly becomes a battle of wits, Death Note is the strongest pick here; Attack on Titan, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Oshi no Ko stand out for very different kinds of openings. Which one is “best” depends on whether you want suspense, scale, reflection, or layered drama.
What makes a first episode the “best”?
A strong premiere can make its central question easy to grasp, create an emotional response, establish the story’s promise, and leave you wanting the next episode. Not every opening needs to do all four equally well: one may excel at suspense while another earns its impact through character and mood.

There is no source-backed consensus or representative vote that settles the question. Viewer discussions show how personal the choice can be: fans name Death Note, Frieren, and Attack on Titan for different effects, among other contenders. Treat the picks below as distinct recommendation lanes, not a definitive ranking.
Four anime premieres worth considering
Death Note: the clearest thriller hook
A notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it gives the story an instantly legible supernatural premise. The opening sets up Light’s attempt to reshape society and the investigation led by L, making the central conflict a contest of strategy as well as morality. Choose it if you want a high-stakes idea that quickly points toward a cat-and-mouse story.
#1 Best Overall
Attack on Titan: a sudden threat in a closed world
People live behind enormous walls, with danger beyond them. Eren and Mikasa’s relative calm is disrupted by the Survey Corps’ return and the threat outside. The premiere is the pick for viewers who want a strong sense of scale, urgency, and peril from the outset.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End: a reflective beginning after the quest
Instead of starting with a heroic party setting out to defeat a great evil, the story begins after that quest has been won. When Frieren’s former companions reunite fifty years later, the meeting prompts her to begin a new journey. Choose this opening for a character-led, reflective start shaped by time, memory, and what comes after an adventure.
Rank #2
Oshi no Ko: layered family and mystery drama
The story’s dramatic setup involves an idol, her children, concealed identities, Ruby’s aspirations, and Aqua’s desire for revenge. That combination gives the premiere a mystery-and-drama pitch rather than a conventional idol-story one. If you are avoiding first-episode spoilers, stop here: those premise details reveal more than a bare genre description.
Which premiere should you start with?
| Choose this | If you want | What the opening emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| Death Note | A clear, high-stakes premise | A supernatural rule leading into a duel of wits |
| Attack on Titan | Urgency and scale | A society behind walls and an outside threat |
| Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End | Reflection and character | A reunion decades after the heroic quest |
| Oshi no Ko | Layered dramatic mystery | Family secrets, ambition, and revenge |
If “best” means the premise that most quickly makes its ongoing conflict understandable, Death Note is the clearest choice among these four. If you mean the most reflective first impression, start with Frieren; for escalating peril, try Attack on Titan; and for complicated dramatic intrigue, try Oshi no Ko.

Why episode length matters in a fair comparison
A premiere’s impact is not directly comparable if one opening has more time to establish its world or characters than another. The available episode descriptions do not establish the runtimes or release formats for all four titles, so this shortlist does not claim that they are equal-length or rank them by a like-for-like runtime comparison.
