Other supernatural series feature hell or spirit realms, but those settings are not automatically the same as an afterlife for deceased humans. This guide separates the direct fits from adjacent choices rather than pretending the evidence supports a definitive top ten.
What counts as an anime set in the afterlife?
Here, “afterlife” means a central setting inhabited by the dead or a postmortem system that processes them. A story about spirits, an underworld, or a character visiting another supernatural realm may be relevant, but it is a looser fit unless the premise clearly establishes that the setting is where deceased people go.

The picks below are grouped by how directly their official premises support that definition. Within each group, the order is an editorial guide to the different kinds of stories—not an objective ranking based on audience scores or a claim that one is universally best.
The clearest afterlife settings
1. Angel Beats! — school life after death
Angel Beats! is the strongest fit if you want an afterlife story built around an ensemble and a school setting. Aniplex describes its stage as a world after death: Otonashi, who has completed his life for an unspecified reason and has lost his memories, meets Yuri at a school in that world. Yuri leads a group fighting against God and the Angel. P.A.WORKS also describes the story as taking place in a world after death. Aniplex’s official story synopsis and P.A.WORKS’ series page support the afterlife premise.

Best for: viewers who want a school-based ensemble drama in a setting explicitly identified as the world after death.
2. Death Parade — judgment at a bar
Death Parade centers on Queen Dekim’s bar, where dead people are invited after losing their memories of death. They play games with their lives at stake as part of a judgment process. The series’ fictional cosmology sends judged souls toward reincarnation or the void; those are rules of the story, not claims about real-world beliefs. VAP’s official series page describes the bar and games, while its official glossary explains the destinations.
Rank #2
Best for: viewers drawn to psychological tension, episodic encounters, and a postmortem judgment premise.
Adjacent picks: hell and spirit realms
These titles connect to supernatural destinations, but the available official descriptions do not establish that their entire stories take place in an afterlife for deceased humans. Choose them if you are happy to broaden the definition.

3. Hell Girl: Yoi no Togi — contracts tied to hell
The official synopsis describes Hell Correspondence, through which a target can be sent to hell. It also says the requester faces hell after death under the contract. That makes hell central to the premise, but does not make the whole series an afterlife-set story. See the official Hell Girl site.
Best for: viewers interested in supernatural contracts and consequences connected to hell.
Rank #4
4. Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits — daily life in a spirit realm
The official synopsis places Aoi in Kakuriyo, a realm populated by ayakashi, where she lives at the Tenjin-ya inn. That makes it a spirit-world story; the premise does not, by itself, establish Kakuriyo as the afterlife of deceased humans. See the official Kakuriyo site.
Best for: viewers looking for life in a supernatural realm rather than a story about the dead being judged or processed.

Why this is not a verified top ten
There are familiar supernatural anime that readers may associate with the afterlife, but a title should not be called wholly afterlife-set just because a particular arc or realm involves it. The official Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War page available for this comparison does not establish a franchise-wide setting claim, and the available official Noragami Aragoto story page does not establish how centrally the afterlife features. The evidence here is therefore not enough to rank either as a direct fit. See the official Bleach site and official Noragami site.
Recommendation discussions also surface titles such as Haibane Renmei, Hozuki’s Coolheadedness, and Sunday Without God. Their premises are not verified here against official descriptions, so they are not included as confirmed entries in this guide.
Choose by the kind of supernatural story you want
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| A setting explicitly described as after death | Angel Beats! | Its official descriptions place the story in a world after death. |
| Postmortem judgment and psychological games | Death Parade | Dead guests play life-risking games as part of a judgment process. |
| A supernatural connection to hell | Hell Girl: Yoi no Togi | Contracts send targets to hell and carry consequences for requesters after death. |
| Daily life in a realm of spirits | Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits | Aoi lives and works in a realm populated by ayakashi. |
If your definition is strict, begin with the first two. If you are using “afterlife” broadly to include hell or spirit realms, the adjacent picks expand the range without blurring the difference in their premises.
