There is no authoritative ranking of animation’s most memorable primates. This is an editorial selection, not a popularity poll: it weighs recognizability, narrative importance, and the comic or dramatic role each character plays. The list spans films and franchises, and identifies each character’s home on screen.
Disney characters with lasting screen presence
1. King Louie — The Jungle Book (1967)
King Louie is the orangutan Mowgli encounters in Disney’s animated family musical, released October 18, 1967. His memorable place in the film is reinforced by Louis Prima’s voice performance, identified by D23. Disney’s film page and D23’s King Louie profile document the character and credit. Disney Animation’s character page also notes Louie among the figures Mowgli meets.
2. Abu — Aladdin
Abu, Aladdin’s pet monkey, is loyal, feisty, and drawn to mischief and shiny objects, according to D23. Those traits make him an energetic counterpoint to Aladdin rather than a background animal. D23’s roundup of Disney monkeys and apes describes the character.
3. Rafiki — The Lion King
Rafiki is a spiritual guide in the Pride Lands. D23’s individual profile calls him a baboon, while its broader roundup calls him a mandrill; because those descriptions differ, this entry focuses on his role rather than treating either label as settled. The profile credits Robert Guillaume as his voice. D23’s Rafiki profile and its character roundup provide those descriptions.

Curious George, from picture book to animated films
4. Curious George — Curious George
George began in the Reys’ 1941 picture book, according to the official Japanese franchise site, and later became the central character of animated films. Imagine Entertainment describes the film version as an irrepressible little primate whom Ted encounters during an expedition to Africa. The official Curious George site gives the character’s origin; Imagine Entertainment’s film page describes the animated story.
5. Philippe — Curious George: Royal Monkey
Philippe, the royal monkey, expands George’s animated-film world beyond the original feature. Universal’s synopsis identifies him as a figure in Curious George: Royal Monkey, making the film a separate screen appearance worth noting for fans of the franchise. Universal Pictures At Home’s film page describes the story.

Why these five—and not a ranked top 17?
The available official material grounds these five characters in identifiable animated films or franchises, but it does not establish a definitive roster of 17 or compare their popularity. “Memorable” here is a matter of editorial judgment: a character’s recognition, importance to the story, and distinctive comic or dramatic function. The selections should not be read as a measured ranking or as the only plausible animated primates.
