Jake Weary would welcome a return as Deran Cody if executive producer John Wells brought him a script—but that is not an announcement of an Animal Kingdom spinoff. Weary has also joked with Finn Cole about a Deran-and-J continuation, while status reporting through February 18, 2026, found no officially announced seventh season or spinoff.
What Jake Weary said about returning as Deran
In an August 24, 2025 interview with TV Insider, Weary said he would be eager to work with executive producer John Wells again if Wells had a script. “I’m such a massive fan of [executive producer] John Wells. And if he contacted me and said, ‘Hey, look, we have a script,’ I would 100% jump to the opportunity to work with him again,” Weary said.

The condition matters: Weary expressed willingness to return, not knowledge that a script exists or that a continuation is being developed.
Is the Deran–J spinoff real?
Weary said he and Finn Cole, who played J, “always kind of joke and talk about a Deran and J spinoff series.” He imagined the characters confronting one another, with Mexico as a possible setting and time in Mexico City as part of the appeal. He described informal joking, not a formal pitch, production plan, or greenlight.

The idea has a story hook, but no confirmed project follows from the actors discussing it. Their interest is separate from a decision by a network, studio, or streamer to order more episodes.
Has Animal Kingdom Season 7 been announced?
No. TV Insider reported in its 2025 explainer that there were no plans for a seventh season or spinoff at that time, while noting that a continuation had not been ruled out. A secondary report published February 18, 2026, likewise said no official Season 7 or spinoff announcement had been made. In the reporting available through that date, neither project had been officially announced.
Animal Kingdom ran for six seasons on TNT. Its renewed discovery among Netflix viewers has brought fresh attention to the show, but streaming interest is not itself evidence of an order for new episodes. The interviews describe the audience revival qualitatively; they do not provide a dated streaming chart figure or other specific audience statistic.
Would Shawn Hatosy return?
Shawn Hatosy, who played Pope, also spoke warmly about the possibility of doing more. In a July 30, 2025 interview with TV Insider, he said, “It’s cool that it has a new life, and maybe we’ll do more,” and added, “I would, yeah. I would love to do more.” Like Weary’s comments, Hatosy’s enthusiasm does not confirm a return or an active project.

What the finale could leave open
The finale gives a hypothetical continuation material to work with, but it does not establish a future storyline. J is last seen alone in a tropical location after betraying the Cody brothers. Deran survives and promises to raise Craig’s son, Nick. In TV Insider’s finale recap, executive producer Daniele Nathanson said she believed Deran would evade police and eventually reunite with Adrian. That is Nathanson’s interpretation of Deran’s possible future, not confirmation of a planned season or spinoff.
So a Deran–J story is imaginable, and actors have voiced interest. As of the February 2026 status reporting, however, there was no officially announced continuation.
