Ang Ulap ng Basura is a children’s story credited to Karanjeet Kaur about Cheekoo, a girl followed by a cloud of rubbish. The cloud shrinks only when she challenges littering and helps people dispose of waste properly. The story’s simple plot connects individual choices with a shared responsibility for keeping places clean.
What is Ang Ulap ng Basura about?
Cheekoo feels lonely because a cloud of rubbish follows her wherever she goes. It is made up of discarded food wrappers, broken toys, pencil shavings, plastic bottles and bags, and flies gather around it. The cloud makes other people keep their distance.

Cheekoo tries to get away from it and tries sweeping it off, but neither approach works. She then notices people littering. Instead of treating the cloud as a problem she can solve alone, she speaks up and helps ensure the rubbish is disposed of properly. As people take action, the cloud grows smaller and eventually disappears.
What does the rubbish cloud represent?
The cloud makes litter visible as a burden that follows the people and places affected by it. Cheekoo’s loneliness also shows a social consequence: rubbish can shape how others respond to a person, even when she did not create all of it herself. The resolution shifts the focus from escape or blame to action shared with the people who are littering.

#1 Best Overall
The story’s practical message is that everyday choices matter. Cheekoo does not make the cloud disappear by wishing it away; she speaks up and helps change what people do with their rubbish.
Who wrote and illustrated it?
The story is credited to Karanjeet Kaur. One presentation copy also credits Bhavana Vvyas Vipparthi as illustrator. The available story and teaching copies are contributor-uploaded materials rather than a publisher’s catalog, so they do not establish a definitive publication record.
Rank #2
The character’s name appears in copies as Cheekoo, Cheeko, and similar spellings. If you are discussing or assigning a particular book, use the spelling in that edition. A publisher, ISBN, edition, and current retailer listing have not been established in the available records; check those details before recommending or buying a specific copy.
How can teachers use the story?
Filipino Grade 2 Quarter 3 Week 7 teaching materials use the story for reading comprehension and sequencing. Its clear progression—from the cloud’s presence, through failed attempts to remove it, to Cheekoo’s response to littering—offers a basis for checking understanding without reducing the story to a lecture about waste.
Rank #3
Sequencing activity
- Ask pupils to identify what makes Cheekoo feel lonely and describe what is in the cloud.
- Have them put the key events in order: the cloud follows Cheekoo; she tries to escape or sweep it away; she sees people littering; she speaks up and helps with proper disposal; the cloud gets smaller and vanishes.
- Ask which actions change the situation and why the earlier attempts do not.
Comprehension discussion
- How does the cloud affect Cheekoo?
- What does Cheekoo do when she sees people littering?
- How does the ending connect the actions of individuals with responsibility for a shared place?
These activities follow the uses shown in the Grade 2 lesson materials; teachers should check the assigned copy for the exact character spelling and wording.

The available evidence supports a basic story overview and classroom context, but it does not establish a specific publisher, edition, ISBN, format, or current stock status. If selecting a copy for a class, verify the author and illustrator credits, language, and publication details against the book or seller’s listing, and confirm that it matches the text used in the lesson.
