Directed by Vanity Fair contributing editor Evgenia Peretz and filmmaker David Schisgall, the series expands on Peretz’s 2022 investigation and gives particular attention to Finch’s estranged wife, Jennifer Beyer. The allegations come from reporting and personal accounts, not judicial findings.
What is Anatomy of Lies about?
The documentary examines how Finch’s accounts of illness and personal crises shaped her relationships and professional life, and how some of those experiences were reportedly reflected in Grey’s Anatomy storylines. It draws on Peretz’s two-part Vanity Fair investigation, published in 2022, while widening the lens to include people affected by Finch’s claims. Peretz said she wanted to give Beyer’s story more room than the original article allowed in a 2024 interview about the series with Vanity Fair.
The official Peacock listing describes the program as a documentary series and names Peretz and Schisgall as directors. It lists three episodes, with runtimes of 58, 54 and 54 minutes.
Who is Elisabeth Finch?
Finch was a writer for Grey’s Anatomy. In its May 2022 investigation, Vanity Fair reported that she had fabricated significant parts of her personal and medical history, including claims about bone cancer and other crises. The investigation described how those accounts, according to people interviewed and documents reviewed, brought her sympathy and professional standing; some claimed experiences were also woven into the show’s stories. These are reported findings and accounts, not a court’s determinations. Read the first part of the Vanity Fair investigation for its account and sourcing.

Why is Jennifer Beyer central to the story?
Beyer, Finch’s estranged wife, is a central voice in the reporting and documentary—not a side character. In the second part of Vanity Fair’s investigation, Peretz reported that Beyer came to believe Finch had drawn on Beyer’s own past trauma for Jo storylines while presenting some of that experience as Finch’s own. The article also reported that Finch eventually acknowledged to a group of friends that she had lied about cancer, a friend killed in Pittsburgh, and a lifesaving abortion. Those details are attributed to Vanity Fair’s reporting and sources; the second installment focuses on Beyer’s account.
What did Finch say, and was she interviewed?
TIME reported that Finch was not interviewed for Anatomy of Lies. TIME also summarized a December 2022 interview Finch gave to The Ankler: she acknowledged that what she had done was wrong and connected her behavior to the attention she received while recovering from a 2007 knee replacement. That is Finch’s reported explanation of her behavior, not an independently established motive. TIME’s coverage discusses both her absence from the series and the earlier interview.

After the documentary’s release, TheWrap reported that Finch posted an apology. Schisgall told the outlet, “The one thing I can wholeheartedly agree with in her statement is that nobody has any reason to believe anything that she says.” Peretz added, “We can’t really judge the sincerity of her sentiment because we don’t know her.” Both remarks are the directors’ responses as reported by TheWrap; they should be read separately from Finch’s own apology and explanation.
