Anadolu’s 72-minute documentary Salda: A Bridge to the Red Planet was scheduled to screen on 9 October 2026 during Public Day of the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye. The film explores Lake Salda’s geology, ecology and biological features, its relevance to Mars research, and the importance of protecting the lake’s environment. Anadolu’s announcement, published 6 October 2026, credits Atakan Kerkuklu as director and producer.
What is the documentary about?
Salda: A Bridge to the Red Planet focuses on Lake Salda in Burdur province, southwestern Türkiye. The documentary examines the lake’s geological, ecological and biological characteristics, and considers how the site can help scientists interpret evidence from Mars. It also addresses the need to protect Salda’s natural environment. Anadolu identifies the film as its production, directed and produced by Atakan Kerkuklu; it is not described as a NASA production.
The announced screening was set for 9 October 2026, the Public Day of the 77th International Astronautical Congress, held from 5 to 9 October at the NEST Congress and Exhibition Center in Antalya. Anadolu’s announcement gives no screening room, start time, ticketing details or audience-access instructions.
Why is Lake Salda called “Mars-like”?
“Mars-like” describes a scientific analogy, not an exact match. NASA identifies geological and mineral similarities between Lake Salda and Jezero Crater, an ancient Martian lakebed. Studying a lake on Earth helps researchers develop context for interpreting deposits observed on Mars and for deciding where evidence of past life might be preserved. It does not establish that life existed at either site.

NASA’s 2021 account describes light-colored hydromagnesite sediments around Salda, microbialites formed with the help of microbes, alluvial-fan deposits and groundwater seeps. These Earth features are useful for considering how similar-looking deposits at Jezero may have formed and where potential biosignatures could be retained. The microbial activity observed at Salda is not evidence of Martian life.
What do Salda and Jezero have in common?
| Comparison | What is known |
|---|---|
| Minerals | NASA describes similar mineralogy at Salda and Jezero, including carbonate materials; hydromagnesite is among the light-colored sediments reported around Salda. |
| Depositional features | NASA has compared deltas and shoreline deposits at the two sites. A 2020 NASA Earth Observatory article called Salda the only known lake on Earth with carbonate minerals and depositional features, including deltas, similar to those found at Jezero. That is the article’s dated description, not a claim of a newly verified global survey. |
| Processes and environments | Salda offers observable examples of deposits shaped by water, groundwater seeps and microbial activity. Researchers use such terrestrial processes as context for interpreting what may have happened in ancient Jezero. |
| Search for biosignatures | Carbonate deposits can help researchers consider where traces of past biological activity might be preserved. This informs a search for possible biosignatures; it does not confirm that such evidence has been found on Mars. |
NASA’s Earth Observatory quoted Briony Horgan, a Purdue University planetary scientist and member of the Perseverance science team: “One of the great things about visiting Lake Salda is it really gives you a sense of what it would have been like to stand on the shores of ancient Lake Jezero.” The same article quoted Purdue graduate student Brad Garczynski: “Carbonates are important because they are really good at trapping anything that existed within that environment, such as microbes, organics, or certain textures that provide evidence of past microbial life.” These comments explain the value of an Earth analog, not proof that Jezero had the same conditions as Salda.
