Bang Si-hyuk—often called “Bang PD”—helped found BTS through Big Hit as a producer and early architect of the group. But he has rejected the idea that he is BTS’s “father,” arguing that such a label diminishes the members’ agency. The public record points to a consequential working relationship: Bang helped shape the project and recruit its early members, while the seven artists built and continue to define BTS together.
Who is Bang PD in relation to BTS?
Bang Si-hyuk is a producer and the founder associated with Big Hit, the company that formed BTS. His role was not simply that of a distant executive: in a 2019 TIME interview, he described how he encountered RM’s music and helped develop the group’s early direction.
BIGHIT MUSIC’s official BTS profile lists seven members—RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook—and says the group debuted in June 2013. That profile describes BTS as recognized for authentic and self-produced music and for interacting with fans; it offers context for why a founder-centered account alone cannot explain the group’s identity.
How did Bang help form the group?
Bang told TIME that producer Pdogg brought him RM’s demo, saying, “This is what the young kids are into.” Bang said he signed RM when RM was young. He had considered forming a hip-hop crew, but said the business context led him toward an idol-group model. In his account, some trainees interested in hip-hop left when they did not want to join an idol group; RM, SUGA and j-hope stayed, and auditions brought other members into the project.

This is evidence of Bang’s practical influence: he helped set the project’s direction and assemble its early roster. It is not evidence that he alone created the members’ artistry. His description presents BTS as a group formation shaped by the producer, the trainees who remained and the audition process—not as one person’s solo invention.
Why did Bang reject the “father of BTS” label?
In an English-language interview with Korea JoongAng Daily, Bang was asked about being regarded as BTS’s father. He replied, “I don’t think any one can create artists,” and explained: “The idea [of me being the father of BTS] makes the group an object, not the subject, and that’s against my philosophy. Also, I’m not married.” The quotation reflects his stated view of artists’ agency; it does not establish that the relationship was always uncomplicated or free of disagreement.

How do BTS’s members describe their shared identity?
The members’ own comments emphasize that BTS is something the seven of them continue to affirm together. In a Weverse Magazine interview, they discussed focusing on the seven as a group and reaffirming the BTS identity after time apart; SUGA said the members remained aligned. That perspective complements Bang’s account of the group’s beginnings without confusing founder influence with ownership of the members’ work.
The members’ authorship and perspective also feature in BEYOND THE STORY: 10-YEAR RECORD OF BTS, the group’s official book based on interviews with the members. Discussing the project, its writer and editor Myeongseok Kang quoted RM as saying, “I want to look back on our journey from our debut to the present before more time passes.” It is a source for BTS’s broader story, not a Bang Si-hyuk biography.

How did Bang’s role relate to the company?
Bang’s connection to BTS also sits within a changing company structure. In a 2022 TIME interview, he described HYBE’s evolution from a label managing one team, BTS, to a company overseeing multiple artists and businesses. This is his account of that evolution as of 2022, not a current organizational chart or a description of BTS’s present reporting arrangements.
What does the 2025 group-album announcement add?
In July 2025, the Associated Press reported that BTS had announced a spring 2026 album and world tour. The group said the album would reflect each member’s thoughts and ideas. This records the announcement and the members’ stated intention at that time; it does not establish whether the schedule or plans later changed, or whether those events have since taken place.

What can public sources establish—and what can’t they?
Bang’s 2019 recollection explains how he says recruitment and group formation unfolded; his comments to Korea JoongAng Daily show why he resisted a parental metaphor; and member interviews give the group’s own account of its shared identity. Together, these sources support describing Bang as an influential founder-producer and early architect, while recognizing BTS as artists with their own agency.
These public accounts do not establish private closeness, the details of every member’s relationship with Bang, or a complete history of disagreements. They are best read as distinct perspectives: a founder’s retrospective on formation, his public philosophy about artists, and the members’ descriptions of their collective identity.
